Is Britain in Europe?

I am going over my European tour catalogues, and the one from Trafalgar is "Britain AND Europe". Isn't Britain in Europe?

It's supposed to be The travel agents use to do that kind of thing in their catalogues. In most of them you also can read "Spain and the Canary Islands" which are also Spain

It is to everyone but the British.

(I once had a conversation with some British acquaintances on this - they insisted the Britisih Isles are not part of any continent - I think they were heading towards claiming them as the 8th continent but didn;t quite have the nerve.)

Of course Britain is in Europe, but I am trying to sell them on the idea of becoming part of the U.S. Haven't gotten very far, but when you think about it, it makes as much sense as Hawaii, maybe more. They are the only people who halfway like us any more.

I'm not sure what your point is about the title of the tour. I can easily imagine a US tour than focuses on Boston but also would cross into New Hampshire and maybe Vermont, as well as more of Massachusetts. If they called the tour "Boston and New England", that wouldn't indicate that they think Boston ISN'T part of New England. Same thing here. I think they're saying the main focus of the tour is Britain and they're also going to include some other parts of Europe as well.

Actually, Boston's in Lincolnshire. A tour of Boston and New England obviously takes in Lincolnshire and Milton Keynes.

I suspect it might fit right in as a "territory" or even a state IF it could bring itself to embrace the anti-intellectual and pro-belligerent outlook shared by many in the U.S. these days.

However, from a political standpoint alone there is no way it would EVER be admitted to the Union unless attitudes change. Why? Well, for one thing it is too progressive: they actually had the nerve to elect a WOMAN as a leader!

Xenos, if you looked at a "US tour that focuses on Boston. . ." and thought you were going to Lincolnshire, then you are far more geographically challenged than the rest of us here!!!

Another thought, FainaAgain: if the hotel showers have curtains then it probably isn't in Europe!!!!

we've jsut returned from Spain and Italy, and I can tell you plastic shower curtains are alive and unfortunately well in those two countries - better than the water going all over the room, but I hate those cold slimy often mouldy things clinging to me!!!

As for Britain - it has always been Britain or the UK and NEVER been part of Europe. This is the same as saying Canada is part of the USA or New Zealand part of Australia.

Saying Britain is part of Europe compares to saying Canada is part of the US? Britain is NOT part of Europe?

Amanda, mind telling us where you went to school?

There are 7 continents - and everyplace has to be part of one of them. Is there some reason the UK is not part of a continent from which it is about 20 miles away?

Thank you, everybody, it's just that I learned geography in Russia, so just wanted assurance that what I've learned is correct.

Intrepid1, you mean if Swiss hotels have not only curtains, but also doors, this is the reason the country didn't join EU?

Some day Britain may even get proper plumbing!

Patrick,
Xenos didn't say she was looking at a US tour, so of course Boston is in Lincolnshire, however i worry about her encouraging anyone to visit Milton Keynes

What's wrong with British plumbing?

It was an Englishman that wrote
"No man is an island, entire of itself. Every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main..."

and supplied the title for one of the Great American Novels (don't all raise your hands at once).
