Is Athens safe ???
We are going to Athens in a few weeks & are wondering how safe it is for tourists.
I think it is not an issue ... what do you think ? |
Why do you think if might not be?
|
Athens is absolutely safe..... if you ask because of the demonstrations that are taking place infront of the parliament... there are mostly young, friendly people demostrating in a peacuful way... no reason to worry about..

I felt safer in Greece than I have in any other country.

It's a big city, so keep your wits about you. But yeah, I never felt unsafe and neither did my wife or daughter. Don't worry.

I am not sure why OP is asking this question..
if the reason is the demonstration that is taking place on a daily basis in the centre right now, then i've already answered that. If this should be a general question though, then i would suggest that you should better avoid certain parts of the city, especially the ones that are in the so called historical centre of Athens.... the forum will give you all the info needed if you tell us which hotel you have booked or have in mind |
Honestly, I have wandered around central Athens (Syntagma, Plaka, & Thisio) areas as late as 2 am, and never felt unsafe. Although not dangerous compared with most other large cities, I would avoid the Omonia and Exarchia areas, especially at night. Greeks live in a democratic society, and enjoy their right of peaceful demonstration, but that should not be construed as a danger to tourists. Enjoy your visit to Athens, and don't worry. :-)

Do you live in an American city? Yes? You will be safer in Athens.

Safest city I've ever been to, 4 times so far this year (including May 15th strike day)
Take a look at this recent video of the demonstrations, all generations, singing, chanting, souvlaki etc sellers, flag waving. Does it make me scared? No, but it does make me feel very emotional. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4sc67pfFhw |
Thanks for all your replys
