Is anyone familiar with Rue Las Cases neighborhood in the 7th?
 

We have rented an apartment on the Rue Las Cases in the 7th. My Mappy site places it between the Basilliqe St. Clotilde, and the Rue de Bellechasse. We have stayed in the 7th before, but I am not familiar with the neighborhood. Anyone out there who can tell me anything about the area? Notes on markets, restaurants, etc. would be most appreciated.

Right, Cigalechanta, I can now see that the Rue Las Cases does run from Rue de Bellechasse to the Rue de Burgogne, but our apartment appears to be on that section from Bellechasse and St. Clotilde. It is not clear from the map that the street cuts through the church grounds; I thought it might dead-end there.

Anyway, what can I expect from this area? It appears to be within a few blocks of a couple of Metro stops, and a stroll across the Pont de la Concorde to the Tuileries.

Go to pagesjaunes.fr and enter the address. You should be able to walk up and down the street. And in the RATP site, in the plan de quartier, you can find all the restaurants, drug stores, etc. in a particular area.

Thanks, Gretchen. I have been reading the Fodor's posts, so I have already "walked" down the street. The photos, however, show typical Parisian apartment buildings, giveing a rather bleak impression. Looks like they were all taken in winter - not a speck of color.

Thanks for the RATP site. I will go there now and start taking notes.

Still hoping for some input from someone who actually has been there.

As you've gathered, the apartment is not on a very exciting block from a tourist point of view. With so many government buildings in the area, the streetscape is rather dull, but it's a very upscale area to live in for Parisians.

A couple of blocks east is rue du Bac, with many shops, traiteurs, cafes, etc. between Blvd St-Germain and the Bon Marché, which has the wonderful Grande Epicerie: http://www.lagrandeepicerie.fr/index_en.asp

As for restaurants in the area, one of the most talked-about new upscale places is the seafood restaurant Gaya on rue du Bac, just north of Blvd St-Germain, along with the Atelier de Joel Robuchon across the street; nearer to you is the Ferme St-Simon on rue de Saint-Simon.

Walking north on rue de Bellechasse, you will pass several cafes and restaurants in the couple of blocks it will take you to get to the Musée d'Orsay.

It's an excellent location for those who are not first time visitors, or for those who prefer to stay just a bit out of the tourist crush.

I had lunch at Gaya, loved the food but not the seats.

Sorry to seem dense, but I can't seem to find the listings on the RATP site for restaurants, groceries, etc., that you mention. I go to the Plan de Quartier, as you suggest, and the Metro, Ministries, etc., are shown, but none of the other things you say should be there.

What am I doing wrong?

I'll try to find it for you in a bit. It isn't intuitive, as I recall.

I don't know where those things are on the RATP maps, either, as I've only seen the public buildings, etc., but you can get such a map on www.mappy.fr easily.

Just type in the address for the "plan" you want in the middle of the front page, and on the right side of that (A Proximite) are a lot of things you can add to list (hotels, restaurants, parking lots -- if you go in deeper, you can get ATMs, also). They do have an English section also, if you prefer that.

Thanks again, Gretchen, I found the information on Mappy. It was of some help, but only shows high-end restaurants. Tante Maurgarite is the only one shown anywhere nearby.

Still looking for anyone who knows this particular area and might have suggestions.

We have rented an apartment for late March on Rue de Beaune (runs parallel to Rue de Bac)---find the Pont Royal over the Seine on your map.

It looks like your location is only about 400 or 500 meters from ours.

The apartment owner has given me some good info on local boulangeries, patisseries,grocery shops, restaurants and clothing stores.
