I read the National Archeological museum in Athens is closed as of Oct 1 too. I really hope those frescoes are still on Santorini because I'd LOVE to see them.

Leaving next week!!! I'm busy photocopying my little maps and some info on the all the archeological sites from guidebooks like a true travel addict! Planning is fun.:)

We saw Akrotiri in July -- it was just ok. We were on a bus tour of the island and were there for 30 minutes tops. It was hot as hell in there because of the tin roofs (120+) I wouldn't bother to see it next time.

I'm back and Greece was so much fun and the sights were awesome! I loved my trip.

I never did make it to Akrotiri due to off-season Sunday bus schedules (I tried). The display of the frescoes at the cultural center ended the week before I got to Santorini. I did see the prehistoric museum in Fira which was pretty good. The highlight of Santorini was walking the caldera for unbelievable views. Oia was very touristy, but still pretty.
I did get to Delos which is a worthwhile trip from Mykonos and really easy to do on your own for 11 euros including the ferry ride.
It was hotter than I expected in mid-late October, but I sure wasn't complaining. Enjoyed the frappes! The islands were getting very quiet already despite the good weather.

Akrotiri is not a destination in itself, unless you're an archaeologist. Santorini in total is the most beautiful island that I have ever seen. If your primary goal is to visit a beautiful island, you will not be disappointed. Definitely see Akrotiri if you go to the island, but it's only worth an afternoon.
