Is ac necessary in San Sabastian in July??

I have had a difficult time finding affordable lodging for 2 nights in the first week of July. I might be able to book the Pension Alemana . They have no air conditioning just ceiling fans but I am concerned about the heat. Any comments on this will be appreciated.

Well, it depends on your comfort level, but I'd never get a room without AC in San Sebastian in July.

I totally agree with St. Cirq. We stayed several years ago at a small B&B just outside the main
drag in San Sebastian with no AC, and were absolutely miserable.

Granted it's the Atlantic coast - so you won;t get 110 degrees like in Seville - but it's still summer and AC is still necessary unless you don;t mind sleeping a really hot room.

Well the beginning of July might be okay. Was there the last week of last July and we needed ac.

I live near the coast close to SS and have never ever needed an AC...and know nobody who has one at home. Yes, it may get hot a day or two, but temperatures are normally mild and never extremely hot (with rare exceptions).

I´d say, no, AC is not a major issue on the northern coast of Spain.

A good room fan helps.

I've lived in San Sebastián and never thought of AC even in summer. Based on the past 13 years statistics you could expect night temperatures from 14°C to 17°C the first week in July.

My parents have stayed in Pensión Alemana, and they were very happy. Ideal location.

Besides, according to their website, the rooms in Pensión Alemana have AC (Aire Acondicionado): http://www.hostalalemana.com/habitaciones.html

Recommend to find a breakfast bar on Calle San Martín. As a general rule, in Spain it is always much better, much more fun and cheaper to have breakfast in a local bar than at the hotel.

If you are concerned about the REAL "need" for A/C..that is to lower the HUMIDITY in the room then yes, you could use it IMO.

If it isn't "needed" then just why do some establishments actually spend the money to INSTALL it????

mikelg Jan 26th, 2010 06:09 AM

Because they can charge more for the room.
Because there are people that can´t just live without it.
Because it is an added value.
Because category hotels just have to have it if they want to satisfy all kind of customers.

But once again, and as a local that lives not far from SS, you don´t really need it, it won´t be that humid or that hot. And at night it even gets chilly...

We vacationed in Santander (which is close to Donostia, formerly known as San Sebastian) in last July and although we had bright sunny weather, we never needed a/c.

It's a matter of luck--it can get to 100 F. in July, but typically it's in the mid-70s. So you have to judge between 2 options: 1) Count on typical weather and save money by not getting AC, but realize that you could be unlucky and get hot weather and be very uncomfortable; or 2) Spend some more money for AC, but realize that you might not need it.

At that time of the year I would get the AC as I don't want to spend a lot of money and time going someplace on a vacation and then being miserable for a few days. If I don't need the AC, I've lost a few dollars. If I do need the AC, I've increased the enjoyment of my vacation time. But whether or not it is worth the "insurance cost" for you and your travelling companions is up to you and your financial situation.
