Is a trek to Mt. Vesuvius worth it?

My boyfriend and I are debating about what to do with our one day off the cruise ship in Naples. The choices are Pompeii and a hike to and up (?) Mt. Vesuvius, Herculeaneum, the Royal Palace, the archaelogical museum. All cannot be fit in in the allotted time. Any thoughts?

We enjoyed the trip to Pompeii, then Vesuvius. It was early Nov.2000 and was a warm day, but freezing at the top of the volcano. It's amazing be looking into the crater and to realize just where you are. I heard that Herculeneum was great too but didn't go there.

Of the items you mentioned, I would cut out Vesuvius and the Royal Palace. Definitely keep Pompeii and the archaelogical museum. That should be enough to fill your time with maybe enough time left for a gelato as you walk by the port;. have fun in Naples. You'll love it.
