Is a passport required to fly between poland and germany
Hello. I have a question on behalf of my son and daughter-in-law.
They are visiting Europe over this coming winter which includes an Airberlin flight from Krakow to Munich.
The potential problem is that the booking was made in both of their married names, but my daughter-in-law will be carrying a passport in her maiden name. The passport still has 7 years before expiration so she had decided to continue using it.
What problems - if any - might they encounter when they board the flight in Krakow with tickets in one name and passport in another?
And, if there are problems, how can they circumvent them?
Hoping someone can help with this dilemma.
Regards,
Steve

As far as I know the name on your ticket must match that of your passport. I would suggest she contact her travel agent or the airline and have them re-issue the ticket in her maiden name so it matches her passport.

The passport name must match the ticket name. She should get her name changed on her passport.

Poland and Germany are Schengen members and travel between the two does not require a passport.
HOWEVER
Your DIL may have a hard time getting on the flight taking them to Europe. She really would be best off getting a new passport. According to the info at https://www.passports.gov.au/Web/FAQ.aspx#faq10 if she applies within 12 months of marriage the replacement passport is free.

No -- but an ID matching the ticket IS required. It isn't for immigration purposes intro-Schengen, it is for ID/security purposes.
This will come up every time she flies anywhere - unless she only uses her maiden name.
I'd renew the passport if it was me . . .

I'm guessing with DebitNM.
Steve, are the tickets to Europe from Oz booked in her maiden name ? As Janisj suggests, it might be possible to use photo ID (an Australian drivers license) already in the married name, for the flight within the Schengen zone.
I'd advise them to take a certified copy of the marriage certificate as well.

For EU members travelling intra Schengen, the only valid photo ID is either a passport or a national ID card. Those countries that don't have national ID, the only valid ID is a passport. I don't think a drivers license for non EU will be valid for intra schengen travel.

That's not always true quokka. I always book tickets in my maiden name - as does everyone in Belgium, and usually in the Netherlands as well.
In some countries you will keep your maiden name for all official transactions and on your passport.
But ticket and passport or ID must be in the same name, even when there is no border control.

Thanks very much for all of your responses.
I now realize that I should have explained the following:
Their flight from Oz to Europe has been booked correctly with my DIL's maiden name. This is why we were hoping not to go down the path of updating her passport now for the Poland to Munich flight. If we do that, we would then have problems with the Oz --> Europe return flights.
I was thinking about having her take a copy of her Marriage Certificate with her, but only if that is guaranteed to work.
Do you think we should attempt to contact airberlin and see what can be done?
Regards and thanks again for all your suggestions and information.
