Is a $5000.00 budget enough for traveling solo to France/Italy????

I知 trying to plan a trip to France/Italy for around September 24 thru October 13 spending 1 week in Nice and then training to Florence for 2 weeks. While in both Nice and Florence I plan on renting apartments in an effort to cut cost. I致e also been checking on airfare and thus far the cheapest flying from Washington Dulles (IAD) to Nice (connecting in Amsterdam) and from Florence back to IAD (also connecting in Amsterdam on KLM) is about $960.00. My question to all would be, is it possible to travel for that length of time on a budget of $5000.00 (even with the weak dollar)? As mentioned I値l be traveling alone and I知 a very frugal traveler in that I知 usually more interested in the sights on the towns/cities I visit and their lifestyles, I'm not a big eater and never interested in buying souvenirs. I must add this would be my second trip to Florence in a year, so I知 not that interested in the sights of Florence that much as I have made a few friends there and plan on spending time with them while I知 there.

Your comments and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi J,

Even if that $5000 includes airfare, it should be sufficient.

Wouldn't rooms in hostels and convents be cheaper than an apt?

Ira is right. You can definitely do that trip on $5000! I've done 3-week trips to Europe for less. You can stay at B&B's or hostels as Ira suggested. Some apartments can be inexpensive.

Ira, have a wonderful trip. If I recall correctly you leave tomorrow. I'm soooooo jealous!

Tks Ira.

That would be worth considering, but truth is I don't like sharing bathrooms. (Just one of my quirks)

Tks also T2.

I've looked into some apartments in Nice and their prices are not to bad. I've also looked into the apartments and B&B in Florence and they too were not too bad either. I wasn't so sure if my budget of $5000.00 was too low this would include if I wanted to do some side trips in both cities.

To MomDDTravel -- Really??? I was not aware of that. Do you have any recommendations/suggestions in either cities. I'm open to staying in such rooms/hostels if the bathrooms are not shared.

A lot of hostels have websites, they will list the different types of accommodation. Also try Lonely Planet's Thorntree site for recommendations.

Most B&B's we've stayed in have private or en suite bathrooms. You can easily get a nice 4 star B&B for 50 euros (or less). As they include breakfast you only have two meals to worry about!

I will definitely compare the B&Bs with the apartment rental for both cities, as I love staying at B&Bs.

jdc26 - I do not have any recommendations in the cities you are going to.

I am planning a trip for the fall and going to be traveling for 5 weeks so I need to keep it lower budget per night then I normally do - and have been researching a lot.

Here is an example (I cannot stay here as it is closed during the time but was thrilled with the reviews)http://www.ammoos.at/

That is in Salzburg.

Or here in London:

I also think that with you traveling solo and B&B will be nice for the connection with other people. (or maybe not

MomDDTravel, you are absolutely right. This might be the way to go to cut cost. Thanks I will look into going this route.

I haven't been to Nice or Florence, but I've used www.hostelworld.com for every trip we've taken. You can search for private ensuite rooms on this site. The reviews are usually spot on and we've had fabulous luck with this site. We don't need any extras in our rooms when we travel as we spend a minimum amount of time there. They list some B&B's as well. Most of their "hostels" are actually 1-2 star hotels.

And I understand your concern - I'll stay anywhere but I have to have my own bathroom!

Oh yes, I undestand the bathroom deal as well - I just do not feel comfortable walking down a hall in my jammies to go to the bathroom nor would I want my dd walking down the hall either.

I need clean, no bugs, and quiet - so that at times leaves hostels out I think (the quiet part).

I am trying to mix it up a bit - apartment, B&B, hostels and hotels.

$5000 is absolutely enough money for a 3 week trip including airfare staying just 2 locations and if traveling budget style. It's quite generous in fact.

Here's why I said that...

$5000-$1000 airfare.
$4000 divided by 21 days = $190. $190USD = ~ 122 Euro/per day

So you'd have say 70 euro to spend for a place to sleep per night (apartment, private room in a hostel, convent, even 1-star hotel) & 50 euro walking around money. Especially visiting friends and eating cheaply seems like that'd be OK.

Your budget is right on - you'll be able to thoroughly enjoy this trip and it's not actually a bare bones budget. I also think the time of year you are going is perfect...I'm excited for you!

Also - $5K is more than enough for 2 weeks. We were in Italy for a week (Dolomites, Venice and Verona) and although having a kitchen for a few days did cut costs, for the 2 of us - including partial rental of a car - we spent about about $1,500. We do travel on a strict budget though.
