Is 6 nights in Sorrento too much?
 

I trevelling solo to Italy and had booked 6 nights in Sorrento, now I'm rethinking that decision and hoped for your input.<BR><BR>The plan is 9 nights Rome (I LOVE Rome and ancient history) 3 nights Venice, 6 Nights Sorrento and then 1 night in Rome before flying home. <BR><BR>Rome is a good spot to use as a base if I feel tired of it (unlikely), so I'm wondering about 6 nights in Sorrento. The hotel in Rome is cheaper than what I have booked in Sorrento. What do you think? Should I shorten the tme frame in Sorrento? Once I've seen Pompeii, the Archeological Museum and Herculeneum, and perhaps Paestum I'm wondering if I'll run out of things to do there.

I spent a week in Sorrento and absolutely did not get tired of it. It's a great base for some of the places in that area; a day for Pompeii, a day for Capri, a day for the Amalfi Coast by bus, another for the Amalfi Coast by boat. Sorrento itself is fun for a couple of days. Choose a hotel that is relaxing and has a great pool and view and you're set.

Sorrento is a BEAUTIFUL part of the world. We just spent two weeks there in March (with an Elderhostel) and the time flew by. This included many day trips to the above mentioned places, lectures etc.(Do you have GOOD walking legs for up and down and for steps???) Transportation in and out is easy....the isle of Capri is wonderful, Pompeii, Amalfi, Monticassino, Vesuvius, Paestum and on and on. The above two replies gave some good ideas. Sorrento itself is a lovely city, full of nice people, good shopping and restaurants, and very safe.. There are loads of hotels in all price ranges.I haven't heard too many positive things about Rome recently....but of course it always is and always will be an interesting city. Just watch your belongings!

Thanks for your responses everyone, I feel better with the decision to stay in Sorrento for 6 nights. <BR><BR>Frankly I'm stunned at what has happened to hotel prices in Italy on the whole since the Euro, but it appears Sorrento hotels are have lept more than others. My hotel in Sorrento (2*) is more expensive than my 3* in Rome. <BR><BR>Thanks again for you help and please excuse the rant.

I was just in Sorrento for seven nights, and there is plenty to do. I would recommend Pompeii over Herculeum (Ercolano). Herculeum is better preserved, but I thought Pompeii over all was more impressive, just due to sheer size. Or if you do it, go to Ercolano first...it will seem anticlimactic after Pompeii.

The hotel Elios is very reasonable, and about a 10 minute walk to town, 20 minute walk from the train station. I don't have an email address, but the address is via capo 33. You can probably find the number online...we got a double with bath overlooking the water for 55 euro. There are shared bath rooms as well, which are cheaper. The hotel is considered 1 star, but I found it very clean. The biggest pitfall is there is only hot water from 6-10 am and pm. I didn't find it too inconvenient.

In Positano, if you like hikes, and want to attempt to kill yourself, there are stair hikes you can do, including a 2000 step climb! Go do Donna Rosa for lunch or dinner...wonderful hospitality. It's in Montepertuso and you will build up an appetite if you do the stair climb!

If you go in the summer, be prepared for the frustration of buses. I was there over easter weekend, and had never seen such shoving! Don't be shy and get yourself on the bus. Or, if you're really gutsy, rent a scooter. My travel buddy and I got so sick of the buses that we rented a scooter, and zipping around the crazy roads with the wind in my hair was worth the several near heartattacks as we skirted around the big buses.
