Is 5 nights in Santorini too much??
 

My fiance and I are planning to take our chances with the crowds, the heat and everything else and spend 6 days of our two week honeymoon in Greece in early August. Originally, we'd planned to do 2 nights in Mykonos and 3 in Santorini but with all that's going on, we're thinking it's best not to press our luck with transportation, etc. and stick to Santorini for 5 nights. Plus, if we're going to get stuck somewhere, we're thinking Santorini's the place to be! My question though is whether there's enough to do for 6 days. It looks like day tripping from Santorini is a hassle and although we love a great pool and a view, we don't want to be bored out of our minds after 3 nights. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Should we add Mykonos back into the mix? Many thanks!

There's plenty to see and do for 6 days. Your time will fly by. There's no reason to go off-island.

I could easily spend 2 weeks or more in Santorini and never get bored.... It is a magical island...
Now if you are planning to be there in early August, you should start making your bookings, otherwise you risk to find only the left overs :)
Flights, ferries, hotels will be full, if you delay your bookings.( with the exception of Athens, for which August is considered low season)

If you need a place to stay, we stayed at Grotto Villas. They are traditional white stucco, built into the hillside with balconies with endless sunset views. They also have a pool hanging on the side of the cliff. Our friends stayed at Sun Rocks, which is in the same area. You must go to the Red beach, ask a local. It's beautiful.

So we were there three days and I thought we might have booked too long. We are not lounge by the pool kind of people and we still had plenty to do and the 3 days flew by and we didn't see everything we wanted to.
I think with 5 nights you will be able to keep yourself busy and maybe have a little time to relax :) We were there in early June when it is less crowded - but Fira an Oia were still very crowded in the middle of the day. Go somewhere else then and save the towns for early morning or the afternoon.
We stayed at Marizan Villas - almost at the tip of the Island in Oia. There is a pool at a nearby hotel that you can use as long as you buy a drink :)

Oh there is a restaurant named Raki in a little town in the southern part of the island. Order the baked feta drizzled with honey and balsamic vinegar - yum! And get the recipe for me :)

speaking of the recipe...here it is :

FETA CHEESE WITH SESAME & HONEY
Ingredients:

200g feta
1 egg
6 tablespoons of Epoch extra virgin olive oil
plain flour (enough to coat the feta)
50g sesame seeds
3 tablespoons of (preferably Greek and raw) honey
Use a slice of feta cheese, about 1cm thick. Beat the egg in a bowl, brush the feta cheese with it, then slightly cover with the flour. Add some more of the egg and then roll in the sesame seeds.
Heat the Epoch olive oil in a frying pan, and cook the feta on each side until golden.
Remove the feta cheese from the frying pan, drizzle with honey, and serve warm

If you like balsamic vinegar, you can replace honey with a mix of honey and balsamico ( 3 parts honey- 1 part balsamico)

I think you have made a good choice in concentrating on only one island, You lose virtually a full day on an island hop and with only 5 days it makes sense to stay on one island. I believe every first timer to Greece should see Santorini it is just spectacular. Be sure to get a hotel with a caldera view. You will spend hours on your balcony and never get bored watching that view and all the ferry and cruise ship activity.
With 5 days you have time to really explore the island.
Walk from Fira to Oia. Explore Fira and Oia. Walk down to Amoudi bay from Oia. Have a winery tour. Visit Pyrgos. Hardly anyone mentions this medeval era town with its walls around the acropolis and magnificent views over the island.
Find a traditional village like Finikia just outside Oia. You can spend a couple of hours just wandering the strets and thinking about all the lives that have been lived there and where all the people have gone from the abandoned houses.
You can visit Ancient Thira and Acroteri which just recently reopended as well as the Red Beach and Perissia or Kamri Beach.
