Irish/english food in Rome
 

I am taking my 80yr old Father to Rome in Feb 2006, He is strickly a (Meat and Potatoes man)Please help me.

I live in Rome and you can get meat and potatoes in just about any italian restaurant. Meat and fish are second courses (secondo) in Italy. The italians love meat and cook it expertly. The primo(first course) is always pasta or rice or soup - justsay no primo if you don't want pasta. As for potatoes, you usually order them as a side dish (contorno). You'll find fried, boiled or oven- baked on offer in most places.

in case you're worried about too much pasta and not enough meat: Pasta dishes have traditionally been served in small helpings, as a first of two (or second of three) courses, before the main course which invariably is meat and very often potatoes. It's only after foreigners started to expect the pasta dish to be a full-size meal that things got confused.

Just skip the pasta dish and order meat and potatoes. The servings might not be as large as your Dad likes them, so maybe a soup up front will be the ticket?

One Italian dessert is "zuppa inglese" - literally "English soup" but actually trifle.

If you mean that your father wants anglo meat and potatoes, not Italian meat and potatoes, you could try the Shamrock Pub on Via Capo di Africa which has Irish food, as does the Trinity College on Via Collegio Romano. The Abbey Pub on Via Governo Vecchio has hamburgers and chicken sandwiches. For steak (and Tex/Mex) there's Oliphant on Via delle Coppelle. I believe there is something like "New York Steakhouse" on Via Crispi, between Via Tritone and Via Capo le Case. Of course there is the Hard Rock Cafe on the Via Veneto.

Also "In Fronte Di" has large portions, hamburgers, roast beef, and steaks. It's near the Spanish Steps on via della Croce. I really think Crawfish is right though, and in most restaurants in Rome, you will have no problems just ordering a "secondo piatto".
