Ireland: Where to eat in ...
Hello everyone! Well, after months and months of planning my trip is all ready but for the going. Now, just one thing left to plan: Food! I'm looking for your favorite restauraunt or pub food recommendations in:

Ely Wine Bar, Ely Place near St. Stephens Green, Dublin is worth a visit. It is excellent for organic food, best wine by the glass, beers too, and is very good value compared to many other more formal restaurants. Steps of Rome, Chatham Street, off Grafton Street is also good for food and inexpensive.

If you find yourself near Midleton on your way between Kinsale and Kilkenny, be sure to eat at Farmgate Country Store and Restaurant. It was probably the best meal we had on the trip last fall.
Near Doolin, we had a wonderful and romantic meal at our lodging - Ballinalacken Castle. We also had several great meals at Ballynahinch in the formal restaurant as well as the pub. |

Not many restaurant choices on Inishmore, but we ate at and enjoyed the restaurant directly at the end of the pier. (Sorry, can't pull the name out of my feeble brain).
You can't miss it. Get off the boat, stand on the pier, face straight down it toward land and there the restaurant is. Can't vouch for any pubs there (the only place I went in Ireland that I can say THAT about!) Have fun! |

Malahide has many places but I If you want to break the bank try bon appetit but its very pricey. Gibneys pub is popular and there are a few others on this street. Cheap and cheerful pizza in Malahide is Marios on a corner across from the apartments. Cruzzos is nice as well but a bit on the high end. It's in the Pier and if you get a window seat it can be a lovely view. Some nights the piano bar is on downstairs and can be fun for a drink. Inishmor - I was a bit pissed off at the crummy food and prices when we were there 2 years ago. We also saw the Ragus show and nearly asked for our money back. They seemed to be taking the piss out of tourists as far as we could tell. The show was half heartly performed in a school gym and the lighting guy was messing artound and the danccer kept making eyes at her boyfriend in the audience and messing up the dancing. It was so bad we just had to laugh. There are better sessions in the oubs just outside the pier area. Otherwise its a little piece of paradise to wander and chill out. Kilkenny - has a fe nice cafes for the day but Langtons is lovely at night or a steak dinner. Anyone will know if you ask down there. Glendolough/Laragh - I am unsure of how many places are here but I believe there is a pub in Laragh my friend stayed in and there are B&B rooms above. They needed to get away from Dublin for a night and came here. The pub served nice meals and its is in the village. Other than this I am stumped. |
Kilkenny- for a nice dinner, I totally second Langton's. For a more pub-like atmosphere, try Bollard's.

Galway: It depends on whether you're driving or taking public transport: I often stop at Garvey's (across from the bus/train station) for a pint & some seafood chowder when passing thru.

These are from my last trip in Spring 2003.
In Kilkenny , we liked the bar/pub called Paris,Texas - odd I know, but it is very large and has an upper balcony that you can eat your lunch /dinner and people watch all the more. They have a large buffet lunch on weekdays too. In Laragh, we ate at the 'Wicklow Heather' restaurant - quite good, and also at the Glendalough Inn's restaurant which was very good, with excellent service. |

On Inishmor, the place at the end of the pier is called the Pier House (hmmmm). The food is pretty good but not cheap. As worktowander pointed out, there aren't a whole lot of places to eat. Make a reservation if you can.

Dublin - Trocadero
We had a delicious meal here. It is a restaurant that is popular with theater goers. You can get a good "early bird" special there as I remember most eat there after the show lets out. Have a great trip |

Kinsale: Man Friday was excellent for dinner. The Spaniard for lunch was also very good. Both are in Scilly, a nice 10 minute walk from town center. Dingle: The Half Door & the Chart House were both very good. Have fun! |
I'll be in Ireland in a few weeks, man - I just can't wait! The planning has been such fun, but I'm ready to just get there already. I was so worried about using a digital camera (never did before) that I just decided to borrow a regular camera and take ordinary pics. I didn't want to have to worry about recharging batteries (which I know I would forget to do) and ruining my photos.
Anyhow, now that there is nothing left to plan, I can focus (not that I haven't already done my research!) on the yummy part - the food! I love threads like this. There are so many good restaurants in Dingle and Kenmare that I'm having a hard time deciding already....and the thought of enjoying a nice pub meal surrounded by locals just warms me up. The nice thing about travelling alone is that I am forced to come out of my shell and mingle with people - it's so much fun. Tennischick, not to hijack the thread, but I am staying at Berry Lodge for one night; did you enjoy your stay there? Thanks! |
