Ireland Transport
Hi, looking for some information on transport within Ireland. What I want to know is the bus and train service comprehensive enough to get me around comfortably?
Does anyone know of any hop on hop off bus tours (like busabout) that operate in Ireland?
Also if you have any must not miss places to visit, please let me know!!!!!
Thanks

Hi Cassandra, The transport system in Ireland is not great at all, I'm live here and still have difficulty! Alot will depend on where you're going- the trains or buses will get around between all the major towns and cities, Dublin,Cork,Waterford,Limerick,Galway etc. Mail me back with more details on what kind of holiday you're looking for and I can give alot more 'inside' information, re.hotels/restaurants etc.
Neil.

Are you traveling by yourself? My husband and I wandered all over Ireland using a combination of hiking, trains and hitch hiking (I wouldn't have hitched by myself). Had a great time hitching.

You can cover much of the country by bus and train, but not if you have to keep any kind of schedule. Service can be haphazard, and you can find yourself stranded pretty easily. But if you don't get upset easily by these things, and enjoy an adventure (and don't mind walking!), go for it.

Hello! I am currently in Ireland and am doing the whole country by bus. Over the past 6 weeks, I haven't come across any major problems. Sometimes you have to check the schedule if you are going to a smaller town because services don't run through them every day. The bus runs a litle bit more frequently in the summer, but it's not that much different. So if you plan a few days to a week ahead, you won't have any problems with the bus. I was a little bit disappointed because in some towns I was in, I wanted to visit surrounding sights that were just too far to walk or bike to and there was no transportation to them. In those cases I wished for a car. In the bigger cities--for example Dublin, Galway, Kilkenny, and Killarney--there are hop-on-hop-off city bus tours and also day tours around the area. Hope this helps. Erin

As has been stated, you won't have any trouble getting to the differnt cities or towns. But it will be very difficult to get to the outlying areas in some areas. I highly recommend Dingle Peninsula...it is beautiful. Getting to Dingle won't be a problem, but getting out to Slea Head could be. Here are a couple of backpacker sites to check out. I really don't have any experience with them, but they do sound like a good option.
www.straytravel.com
www.tirnanogtours.com
Good luck.

Thanks everyone for your information, it has been muchly appreciated!!! At the moment, the places that I want to visit are Dublin, Galway, Coonemarra (sp?), Doolin, Killarney, Dingle, Cork, Cashel, Waterford and Dublin. I have heard so many wonderful things about Dingle. I might also do the Ring of Kerry, still deciding...

I really would like to hire a car but the fact that I am travelling alone and are under 21 does not make it an easily accessible option! Lee, thanks for those sites, I think I might look into them a little further.

And here's a big ask-anyone know of a car hire place that would hire to me, a 19 year old? don't laugh...i know its pretty impossible.
