Ireland / Northern Ireland in May

We have 10 days of auto touring, but only have a vague plan of our route. We're first visiting my bro-in-law's cousin in Newcastle, then a drive by the Giant's Causeway, then it's wide open. The south-western region seems to be on everybody's list of "don't miss", but seems to be quite a haul, especially since we're flying in & out of Dublin. Any insight????

Personal opinion is that parts of the south-west are very pleasant, but it tends to be busy. If you want scenery and quieter spots you might consider Donegal and Connemara first. And a little longer in Antrim.

Get to the Causeway very early or very late if you can, otherwise it will be swarming with people.

thanks for the information. One of the loops we considered would go from Colerane thru Donegal, Sligo and to Connemara. So any specific information on must see sights in these areas would be greatly appreciated. Also to CU thanks for the links

When are you going? We did the Northwest and some of NI in April 03 and it was very quiet. There were very few people at Giant's Causeway the day we were there. We went to Bushmill's Distillery and spent quite a bit in the shop there, although we did not do the tour.

Malin Head is worth a look; I believe it is the most northern point. I love the rocky coastline and could watch the waves crashing all day...

If you make it to Donegal, be sure to see Slieve League. The drive up and down will get the adrenaline flowing.

We always tend to hug the coast when in Ireland and have never gone wrong.

Hi,

I don't think 10 days is long enough to go from Newcastle in the North, via the Giant's Causeway, to the South West.

Your itinerary for Coleraine, Donegal, Sligo Connemara is just about doable.

Don't forget the lovely Mountains of Mourne, Castlewhellen forest park, Tullymore Forest Park and Rostrevor when you are in Newcastle.
