Ireland No Car
 

We are traveling to Ireland in August. As there are 8 of us. We are wondering if the bus system is better to use than renting a mini van. We plan on flying into Dublin and then traveling to Leixlip,Cork,Cobh, (Our Great Grandfather died on the Titanic). The ring of Kerry. We also know there is a train system and worder if that is a good way to get from Dublin to Cork. We have 8 days and could use some help!

Well, you must realize that the roads in Ireland's countryside are extremely curvy and narrow and that you'll have to drive on the left side of the road. Any van that would comfortably hold 8 adults plus luggage would be rather large. I doubt if a mini-van would be big enough. Yet the best way to see the countryside is by car. Why not consider renting two small ones instead of the van. Doing so would allow more flexibility and independence should you sometimes wish to go different directions.

Agree on renting 2 cars. Not only makes drving more manageable - but also means you don;t all have to be joined at the hip 24/7 (since therre are some days people will want to do different things in a group that large).

Speaking as an Irish person born and bred, whatever you do do NOT rely on public transport, that way lies madness. Plus the Ring of Kerry is so beautiful you really need to be able to stop when you want for a look at the view, a pint of Guinness in a nice pub, a walk etc. It is true that the roads are narrow and winding, and a lot of car parking spaces pretty small, so hiring two cars would be best. It does also give you more flexibility than if you all have to travel together all the time.
