Ireland - Kinvara

Is anyone familiar with this seaside village near Galway City? We were planning on using it as a touring base for that area.
Thanks.

Oh, I love Kinvara! It's often where we stay when we first arrive in Ireland. Lovely little town with a small but pretty harbor area. Great base for west Clare and the Burren, and not far at all from Galway City. One of my very favorite Irish towns.

burry,

You've selected a fine and attractive base from which to explore the fun buzz that is Galway City and the fascinating landscape that is County Clare's Burren.

While in Kinvarra, make some time for a visit to Dunguaire Castle, a solid example of an early 16th century tower house.

As for eats and a few cold ones, Kinvarra won't let you down, as it features several goods restaurants and a wide variety of pubs. I recall Tully's as a good place for a pint.

While in the region, you'd be well advised to take in Corcomroe Abbey, located close to Bell Harbour. The remains of this Cistercian abbey are nicely situated and date from the 12th century. Another consideration - especially if the weather turns against you - is a visit to Ailwee Caves, located outside the pleasant village of Ballyvaughn.

Best of luck.

Green's is my favorite Kinvara pub with Tully's coming in a close second. Could Timmy Tully (the dog) possibly still be alive?

Thanks, all, for the reassuring and helpful comments. I think we'll enjoy Kinvara.

There is a castle in Kinvara which conducts tours - very interesting. There is a web site at www.kinvara.com. An excellent B&B is the Conneely's - they're on the web site. If you have a family, they have a large suite with kitchen, etc. There is an excellent hotel, which has an ouitstanding dining room, the Merriman, more expensive than the B&Bs. Kinvara is centrally located, in that Galway City is 30 minutes in one direction, cliffs of Mohr 40 minutes in the other.
