Ireland itinerary revised...how's it look?
Ok, I've scaled back our May trip. We are most interested in scenic drives, hiking, and small towns What do you think?
Day 1. arrive in shannon rent car (do bunratty castle if not too jet lagged), drive to Kenmare stay in KENMARE Day 2. hiking in Kilarney Ntl. Park stay in KENMARE Day 3. driving tour Mitzen Head, Beara Pen. Sheeps Head. stay in KENMARE DAY 4. Possibly R.O.K. Drive to Dingle stay in DINGLE Day 5. Stay in DINGLE Day 6. Drive to Doolin, Cliffs of Moher stay in DOOLIN Day 7. Drive to Clifden stay in CLIFDEN Day 8. CLIFDEN Day 9. Drive to Westport stay in WESTPORT Day 10. Last day Long, free day to go any- where. Arrive in Shannon area late Stay in SHANNON (area) Thanks for all the help I've received. Any comments are greatly appreciated. |
That looks very doable. I would recommend on your drive to Dingle, go via the Conor Pass.
You might want to consider staying and doing Bunratty on your last day, visiting the folk park, castle, doing last minute shopping, and having a few pints of Guinness prior to your next day departure. Kathleen's Pub at the Bunratty Castle Hotel is a great place for dinner that evening. ((b)) |
I agree with budman, Bunratty on your last day, good shopping and a couple of good Pubs within walking distance of the Castle and Folk park. Trying to do all three peninsulas in one day may be a little ambitious. If your out on the Mizen Peninsula during lunch stop at Herons Cove in Goleen. Lastly Clifden is nice and the Conamera Nat. Park is worth a visit. I didn't find Westport worth the drive but others liked it. Plan on about three hours from Westport to Bunratty. Have fun

It looks MUCH better! :) Good job.....
I'm with Johnod though... Don't try to do too much in one day. For example: ROK is an all day excursion. Tons of tourists, cars and buses along the way too. I was worn out and ready for some down time, not more driving. You are going to have a wonderful trip. The places you've chosen are fantastic! |
loves-labs, Good job. Agree with others, save Bunratty for last day. Also I would skip the Ring and get on over to Dingle. The Ring has some very pretty spots, but you will have already seen some beautiful scenery and Dingle has so much to offer in the way of scenery.

That looks like a good plan. What time does your flight leave Shannon to go home? Only reason I ask is if it is in the afternoon you don't have to confine your choices to just staying in Bunratty. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Its a shame you've decided to keep your trip to the Southwest,as you will miss out on some lovely scenery in Donegal, but as you have only 5 days and you want to visit those places you have listed, then maybe thats the wisest choice, enjoy Ireland, May is a good month to come.

Looks good but I would be concerned about that trip to Kenmare. Jetlag can hit you like a bolt out of the blue when you are driving and I am talking from experience.
If you are going to Bunratty could I suggest www.blarney.ie for that bit of shopping there. For the trip from Dingle to Clare www.shannonferries.com will help. Have a great trip and safe journey. |
