Ha! Very entertaining "nightmare" B&B stories...though I won't show the hubby because we definitely will never ever stay at one.
We've made more progress on our planning. In addition to 2 nights Dublin, 2 nights Westmeath (Athlone, we'll spend 3 nights in Galway and last night at Dromoland (our big splurge before we start having babies).
Final question -- which hotel in Galway?
Westwood House -- booked.
Great Southern -- ? though i've heard not alot of parking
Galway Bay in Salthill -- ? is this an easy walk to downtown Galway? or a drive?
Ardilaun House Hotel -- ? i read some travel reports that the place is past its prime. Wonder if anyone has recent info?
Glenlo Abbey Hotel ?
Thanks all!

I would recommend the Jury's Inn in Galway Town. It is reasonably priced (for a Hotel), wonderfully convenient to the Old Town, yet on the outer edge of the city, for easy access to the Connemeara drives and sites.
They have a slightly spotty record, in some forems, but I stayed there in April of '99 and again in Feb of 2002 and had no complaints at all. The rooms are unremarkable, but roomy and the bathrooms are hughe by Irish standards. The views of the River Corrib, Wolfe Tone Bridge and Galway Bay are awesome, if you are up high enough and are on the river side of the hotel. We would stay there again.

Just read this post again. Thanks for the heads up on the B&Bs in the US. I'm planning a driving trip down the west coast from San Fran to LA next May. Hoping inland to catch Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. Will probably be Holiday Inns all the way (at least you know what you're getting I suppose!).
Thanks again,
P
