Ireland final itinerary outline.
 

Our final itinerary:
Friday 27 June 2014: Arrive in Dublin at 14:30, pick up our rented car and leave for Newtonmountkennedy where we will stay over and recover from our flight from South Africa.
Saturday 28 June - Thursday 3 July : Leave for Bandon in County Cork . Follow road via Glendalough (short visit), and then on to Bandon. We have been to Cashel in 2011, but any suggestions along the way. Maybe Cahir castle.
We would like to see as much as possible in West Cork. We love the villages, music, culture, distillery or 2, tap dancing show, scenic drives and castles. We have done Dingle and Ring of Kerry in 2011.
Friday 4 July: Stay over in Adare on our way to Galway. A visit to Banrutty, one or two villages during the day. Late ffternoon and evening exploring Adare.
Saturday 5 July - Saturday 12 July: Oughterard. (Connemara) We have tried many options, but decided on a self-Catering. We like to stay in self-catering, do our trips during the day and then to go to the Supermarket and "live with the people!". I have looked into the possibilty to stay 2 - 3 nights in a place and then move on, but it worked out more expensive for us and was not self-catering. We will definately visit Aran Islands, Galway, Sky Road and a list of recommendations which we will try to see.
Saturday 12 July - Monday 14 July: Dublin. Sunday we want to visit the Guiness Storehouse. We will be staying in Swords and any extra time we may have, we would like to visit surrounding sightseeing sites. We have been to most attractions in Dublin city during our previous visit, but could not fit in the Guiness Storehouse.

If you have convered Dingle and the ring of kerry in previous visits have you considered covering northern Ireland instead this time? Besides the Dingle peninsula we were certainly wowed by the Giant Causeway and Carrick-a-rede rope bridge (the Antrim coast road in general) in N. Ireland on our last trip. Also Slieve League in Donegal is breathtaking. Connemara is gorgeous as well.

Hi, thank you. Yes, we have considered it, but as South Africans we need a visa to enter UK. We will include the Antrim coast when we visit UK again. Seems like a must see!

Between the Shannon and Galway there are a few options http://goo.gl/maps/xMOHV and once in Oughterard along the N59 http://goo.gl/Ek8bpw & http://goo.gl/maps/uqIi8 you can drop down to Rossaveal for the Inis Mor ferry easily from there.

Tony, I have studied your links, thank you. I am not sure about our stay-over in Adare and need your advice. On Friday 4 July we will be going from Bandon to Galway, but have the night of the 4th to spend. I thought Adare would be good, but have now second thoughts. (Too close to Bandon). Perhaps stop at Adare for sightseeing, on to Bunratty Castle and stay the night in Ennis? Leave Ennis then on Saturday 5 July for Oughterard. Take the route Doolin and the coast line.

I have to confess Bias towards Ennis but it does make a good stopping off overnight, more a locals town with a few tourists rather than a tourists town with a few locals. http://visitennis.com/ Adare takes about 1/2 hour to walk round nice as it is, and is a place we use ourselves now and then but as you say there are other options to fit in.. Maybe have a look at Adare Castle accessible through the visitors centre. Limerick has King Johns Castle the Hunt Museum and other points, Bunratty folk park is a good option we take our visitors to quite often especially the younger ones. Quin Abbey is worth a look just a short detour off the route.
