Ireland Ferry Crossing
 

I was wondering how rough the crossing was in the ferries that go from the UK to Ireland? I have kids that get seasick.

Which crossing will you be taking? My experience has been the Stranraer to Larne crossing and it can be very, very rough!

We will be going from Penbroke, Wales to Rosslare, Ireland and then back from Dublin to Anglesy. Does this help? I am unfamiliar with the esact areas. Thanks for the input!<BR>Ruth

Like all these questions it's difficult to generalise. It depends on what time of the year you are going. Right now, it has been very windy in most of Ireland and Britain, with winds gusting over 80mph, and ferry services have been disrupted. The Irish Sea, compared with the English Channel, seems to get more rough weather. I've heard that if the sea is choppy, you are better off on conventional ferries than on fast ferries like hydrofoils and catamarans, which make nausea-inducing pitching movements, and that St George's Channel at Pembroke/Fishguard-Rosslare is generally rougher than Dublin/Dun Laoghaire-Holyhead. But it depends on the weather on the day. Make sure you carry good travel sickness tablets and give them a couple of hours before sailing.

Last year we were going to take the ferry, but searched and found insanely cheap airfares on Ryan Air. Definitely easier, quicker and no sea sickness.
