Ireland: Euros
 

Going to Ireland in May. Should we acquire Euros here in the US, or wait till we arrive in Ireland? Where would we get the best rate?

Welcome to Fodors: This question is asked a few times every week. You do not want to buy € ahead of time. Now - if you want just a few € to get you by the first day, you can order a few from your local bank or buy a few at your departure airport. I don't bother even doing that much but if it makes you feel a little better go ahead and get €50-€100 - but that is all.

For all other cash - use your ATM card(s) after you are in Ireland. It will be the cheapest option.

euros are not the currency of Ireland..It is the Irish pound.

travelbunny - you are several years out of date. Yes - Ireland DOES use the € . . . . .

travelbunny, I think you're about 6 years out of date. I believe the year was 2002 when the euro replaced the Irish pound (punt).

whoops- I was in Ireland twice last year..I didnt even realize YIKES! Just goes to show you what happens when you use your credit card for everything (or bank card) and just submit expenses. I am not really this scatter brained but probably am in about 4 countries a month so perhaps you can understand the confusion.

When we arrived in the Shannon Airport there was an ATM conveniently in the airport. I would say you do not need to get it ahead of time.
