Ireland Dress Code?
 

We'll be in Ireland mid-May, and have no clue on what to wear. We'll be touring the southwest corner, Ring Of Kerry, plus some castles. Jeans okay? Tennis shoes? Or is that too casual? I realize it will be cool and wet, but not sure on how "casual" we can go. Thanks!

You will be fine with jeans and tennis shoes, but bring layers. I usually wear a comfortable t-shirt, a light sweater, and then a wrap for over that, and add/subtract as need be.

When I was there in April 2002 I rarely needed all three except in the evening.

If you were going to some posh club in Dublin, I'd say go dressier, but touring the west? Go comfy!

Someone told us: definitely do not wear orange.

If you are attending church service, I would dress like you would to church services in the States. However, simply visiting the church, just use some taste -- no halters and short-shorts. (like you'd want to in May Ireland temperatures?)

I find I like people better if they wear sneakers in castles (as opposed to heels), as they don't sound like a herd of horses walking through the halls :)

Wear orange, green, blue all colours - no one will notice I promise unless its really awful anyway!! If you wear a lot of green though you may stand out as a tourist!

Jeans are great for Ireland. May can be great so a pair of shorts might be useful and layers with light rain jacket if you have one. Don't kiss the blarney stone i've heard nasty things about that :-)

Definitely jeans. I wore jeans and black loafer type shoes, a long sleeved t-shirt and a lightweight REI jacket every day. For church I wore either a skirt (too dressy) or dark gray slacks (just right.)

Please dont worry about what to wear here (Ireland). Jeans and tennis shoes will be grand for touring, infact wear what ever you like, no one minds one bit honest, fashion is very relaxed here. If you plan on visiting churches, you will be fine in jeans, likewise if you attend church services jeans are fine, but if you want to dress in trousers and a jacket thats fine too. Have fun, the weather is a bit cold at the moment, we had a nice end to April, but today is cold and we expect showery weather with a bit of sun till the end of this current weak. I would take a warm jacket with you as its not warm enough in the evenings yet to go without one.
