I am finalizing a two week trip to Ireland in June. Which do you prefer - B&B's in town or just outside ie 10-15 minute walk? We are staying in Kilkenny, Kinsale, Kenmare Dingle, Doolin and Shannon. Just wondered about the walk. We will be sightseeing during the day and pubs at night. We are 2 adults traveling. Would appreciate your response.

Every location is different - but in general I prefer B&Bs on the edge of villages - not too far out but not right on the main road/high street.

If possible, I like a pub or restaurant w/i about a 5 min walk - 10 max. That pub w/ good food a 15/20 min walk away seems like miles if you are walking it in a rainstorm.

In town. In many towns in Ireland, it can be very dangerous to walk along the roads at night. It is pitch black and there may not be any sidewalks.

Another question - are there cabs that run in the towns until 10:00 or 11:00 at night? If we hitchhike can we trust the driver?

As far as Kilkenny is concerned I highly recommend a fantastic B&B called Dunromin. It is a 15 minute walk from the center of town. All sidewalks and safe at night. Valerie Rothwell is the most wonderful hostess and her home is absolutely lovely. And she makes a wonderful Full Irish Breakfast. Her rates are reasonable.

I would stay in town. As Ann pointed out, it can be very dangerous to walk along the country roads at night. The roads are very narrow and very dark.
The towns are very small and very walkable ...and I don't know if you'd get a cab later on in the evening.

I would stay in town or like others have said, just a short walk away. Are you making reservations ahead of time? If so, be sure to ask about walking distance and walking conditions. It does indeed rain a lot and there's nothing worse than getting soaked. Also, you can't imagine how bad the roads can be. Driving is a real ordeal. Walking on narrow roads in the pitch dark of night is dangerous. We made the mistake of staying outside the towns AND made the mistake of making paid reservations ahead of time. It really limited our enjoyment of the pubs...drinking Guinnes and driving don't mix. Enjoy your stay in town.

My husband and I were in Ireland just a year ago, and I agree that staying in town is the way to go. After a day of driving around, the last thing you want to do is get in the car again to drive to dinner. And, while I'm sure there are cabs, I can't say I saw very many.

You need to book cabs ahead of time, as you can't just flag one down driving by.

A 20-year-old kid walking home from the pub was hit by a car last Saturday night in a village near us. He's now a parapalegic. The driver simply didn't see him, as it was very foggy. Stay in town.

In relation to Dingle. You should stay in Ventry just 4 miles from the town. The village has its own post office/shop/pub and beach.
