Ireland and Portugal
 

I'm thinking of combining tours of these two countries in the next year and would appreciate some insight on the best time of year to do a trip lke this. The order does not matter. Thanks.

Sounds like a great combo to me. I have only been to Ireland in September, and Portugal in June - - but I think that the same best time windows for most of Western Europe are still the best for this particular combination as well. I agree with Rex. September may be a little better (drier).

but the days are longer in late May than in early September.

If you are interested in the cities of these two countries (both of which we love), try Dublin and Lisbon in late March-early April, before Easter, if possible (when the rates go up in Portugal). Spring is especially beautiful in both, with all that green in Ireland and the alomond trees in bloom in Portugal. Being in cities means that the inevitable down-side of spring showers is muted, and turned into museum or shopping or other indoor pleasures. In any season, enjoy this inspired combo!
