Ira's back

Hi all,

As MacArthur said, "I have returned".

It's about 05:00 here in Madison.

I am not suffering from jet lag.

Our cats decided to tear a hole in the porch screen and escape.

They didn't know about the new timer for the water system.

My Lady Wife was awakened at 03:30 by two wet cats crying for help.

I was awakened at 03:45 to assist in retrieving two wet cats.

Summary of our visit to Europe.

Full report to follow.

We flew into Munich, rented a car and drove to Salzburg for a few days. From there we drove to Hallstatt and toured some lakes.

Hallstatt to Fuessen to see the castles.

Up the Romantic Road to Rothenburg, via Linderhof and Wies, for two nights and then down to Lake Constance (Bodensee).

Long day's drive to Beaune - stayed for a few days - then on to Alsace and Nancy.

Nancy to Filderstadt (near Stuttgart Airport), and then home to ATL.

A very nice 3 weeks of good food, good wine, great scenery and lovely people.

Welcome back. Can't wait to read your report. Now I have your correct image when I read your posts. Are the cats okay?

bilboburgler Jun 6th, 2007 07:25 AM

Thank goodness the level of input just went up by 30%. I was in the Tarn while you were in Bodensee. It has been tough without you

Welcome back to the bosom of the Midwest, <i>mon ami</i>. There's no place like home. Sorry about the wet cats...but they got what they deserved, huh?

Anyway, count me among those looking forward to your report!

Welcome home. Glad you and the Mrs. are home safely. It sounds like you had a wonderful time.

PalenQ Jun 8th, 2007 09:19 AM

Ira - how did you like Hallstatt? Must have been off-season. Did you do the Ice Caves? thanks.

ira Jun 8th, 2007 09:49 AM

Thanks for the welcoming words, folks.

It took me two days to rescreen the porch.

I'll be working on the trip report now.

Hi PQ,

Hallstatt was very nice. The season was just beginning. Flowers in bloom, beautiful weather, great views, not particularly crowded.

I missed calm rationality and humor while you were away!

kate12 Jun 8th, 2007 11:23 AM

Hi Ira,
I am watching for your trip report!! Looking forward to hearing about it.

nini Jun 8th, 2007 11:54 AM

Welcome back Ira! Looking forward to your report. Austria and Germany are on our list for the fall. Please elaborate on your hotel/pensione in the Salzburg area. Did you stay in the one just outside the city and take the bus in? We may book the same pensione and would love to hear comments.

Images2 Jun 8th, 2007 12:39 PM

Welcome home ira! We're also staying in a B&amp;B, Haus Reichl, just down the road from Salzburg, at Christmas. I'd love to hear how it was to go into town from your B&amp;B. Did you ever take the bus along this route? What were your favorite sites in Salzburg?

fun4all4 Jun 8th, 2007 12:45 PM

Great to have you back! I am looking forward to your report.

Sorry about the screen and middle-of-the-night rescue #-O - I bet they'll never do that again. :))

bobthenavigator Jun 8th, 2007 04:29 PM

Yes, I do want to hear more.

dorkforcemom Jun 8th, 2007 04:40 PM

So good to hear you had a great trip - I love Salzburg (Mozart fan &amp; all), especially looking forward to hearing of your adventures in Salt City.

Dayle Jun 8th, 2007 04:43 PM

Hi Ira,

Really looking forward to your report, as always! You visited some of the places I'm planning for my next trip - but the first to Germany, and maybe Austria.

Ciao

rex Jun 8th, 2007 05:14 PM

&lt;&lt; Madison where? NJ, WI or other?? &gt;&gt;

It's a little tiny Madison.

Ira ist ein Georgia peach...

Best wishes,

Rex

p.s. Maybe I can find it in your pre-trip posts... but where did you stay in Beaune? (I guess I _could_ wait for the trip report!)

SandyBrit Jun 8th, 2007 05:22 PM

ira,

Looking forward to full details.

Welcome home.

Sandy

Gina_07 Jun 8th, 2007 05:41 PM

Ira:

we missed you. Looking forward to your report.

ira Jun 10th, 2007 02:14 AM

Hi all,

Friday (I think it was) I came down with the Flu.

Slept the clock around (in between bouts of diarrhea and vomiting).

I am currently alive (if one can call it that).

Rex: We stayed at the Grillon in Beaune. I recommend it.

More to follow.

Howdy Ira! We are packing and ready for the redeye tomorrow. Munich by train to Salzburg, by bus to St Gilgen and ferry to Gasthof Furberg for 12 days. We will do day trips via bus and train to all the cool places. Glad it was beautiful....weatherdot com is predicting non-stop rain, hmmm!

ira Jun 10th, 2007 02:49 AM

Hi LL,

Weather report for all of our trip was rain, too.

It only rained 3-4 of the 21 days we were there, and that was mostly light showers.

Your Gasthof looks great.

Enjoy your visit.

Sue4 Jun 10th, 2007 09:30 AM

Ira, looking forward to your report!

Mr go, I think Ira is in &quot;the bosom of the South&quot;, not Midwest. Madison, Georgia, not Wisconsin. Is that right, Ira? I remember often driving thru Madison from Florida on the way to N.C., and thinking &quot;what a pretty town&quot;!

dawnnoelm Jun 10th, 2007 01:53 PM

Ira,
Welcome back! I was wondering where you went off to - as others chimed in - your sense of humor was missed!

Fidel Jun 10th, 2007 02:12 PM

Hi I, looking forward to yr report.

ira Jun 10th, 2007 03:38 PM

Hi nin and Im,

We stayed at www.ammoos.at/main.php?language=en&amp;m=home

I think that this is the best place for the price we have ever had the pleasure of staying.

We took the no. 21 bus into town.
Salzburg has a terrific bus system. See
www2.salzburg.info/praktisches_2535.htm

The Salzburg Card is more than worth the price
www2.salzburg.info/sehenswertes_283.htm

More when I am well enough to write a report.

((I))

Images2 Jun 11th, 2007 04:24 AM

Thanks Ira. How long did it take to get into Salzburg on bus 21? We'll be doing this at Christmas!
