Rex and Patrick:
Let me own up to it. Didn't mean to refer to the Pebble Beach golf course in Monterey, which is in the Central Coast.
I wanted to refer to to certain steep stretches of the Pacific Coast Highway north of San Francisco - i.e Hwy 1 along Marin County, Point Reyes, Jenner, Bodega Bay, all the way up to Mendocino. As a resident of Marin County (part time in Marin, full-time in NYC), I've driven these roads many times, and in a some stretches, the roads are definitely steeper than the ones leading up to Montserrat.
Patrick: I don't recall reading any of your posts (or having the time, like you do, to dig them up), probably because they were useless to me anyway. Your basis on getting on my case is to pick on one of my posts (most likely not as much as yours, as you apparently have all the time in the world to spend with your computer in this board), and which doesn't make me care anymore than I really don't. Plus, and I'm sure you will agree, it doesn't add anything to whatever credibility you may have with me.

That's so funny, barbmike about a Eulogy.
Yesterday, I turned on the Today show and was greeted by a photo slide show and tribute to Willard Scott. I immediately said, "OH, Willard Scott died!" Then found out it was a 25 year honor or some such thing. I guess we only think people should be raved about AFTER they die! I don't think that's the case with Ira!

Another Ira fan here who enjoys reading his posts (especially about his beloved Paris, as it's my favorite place too). I really like how, after someone posts a trip report, he always thanks them "for sharing".

I am also pretty new to fodors but can already see that all of these wonderful compliments are true about Ira. He was nice enough to reply to my very first post and now I know I probably could have found the answer by searching past threads. To me this proves how generous and patient Ira must be.
Thanks to all of the fodorites that provide concise, valuable advice to travel junkies across the globe!

Hi guys,
You have no idea how read my face is from the wonderful remarks. I can only say, "Aw shucks".
Hi LoveItaly,
>The title is "Life in a Postcard". <
Thank, you. I shall ask my library to get it for me when I get home.
Hi caroline_edinburgh
>How many times have you actually been to Italy, Ira ?<
I had been to Venice 7 times, when my wife reminded me that I had actually been to Italy.
For the rest of the country, I am a mere tyro. I owe very much to the more experienced travelers here and at www.slowtalk.com.
>What does the lightbulb mean ?<
The code is (_(_I_)_) without the _
You guys want steep.
My Lady Wife and I were driving up route 590/591 (I think this is the right route number) outside Santa Fe, New Mexico, at speeds sometimes approaching 7 mph, honking at every bend in the road, praying that no one was coming the other way, when we finally reached the top of the ridge - 3500 ft up.
Coming at us was a Lincoln Continental.
Fortunately, he was as scared as I was and going very slowly.
A local pointed out the only place wide enough to pass.
This took almost 5 min.
On the way down, I kept the car in "1" and my foot on the brake.
The grade is up/down 3500ft in 1 mile.
I don't want to ever do this again.

In this sequence of nine keystrokes... (_(_I_)_) ...four of them are the underscore character. Omit all four of those and the result displays the lightbulb, like this:
