I agree with efobrien that if all you want is an electronic reading device, a Kindle, Sony Reader, or Nook is a better choice. The color Nook weighs about 16 ounces, compared with 21 ounces for the iPad 2. My Sony Reader Pocket Edition weighs only about 5 ounces, and the battery lasts a week or more between charges. Each device has its own strengths and weaknesses, so it pays to do some research before you make up your mind. Factors to consider are which file formats it supports, and from what sources you can download books. :-)

I am loving my iPad! I think it is a great gadget and great to have on a trip. Having taken my netbook on a trip to Maine last year, this will be so much lighter. With multiple books downloaded already, I'm prepared!

One question -- is wifi generally available in most of the Greek hotels now? Or, should I say, "free wifi"?

I've got all my "important" information converted to documents that are in either pdfs or saved in word format in the pages app, but it would be nice to access the internet in the hotel rather than outside.

Progol, I can't speak for all island hotels, but most seem to be offering wifi these days. Even the 60-something landlady I stay with on Antiparos took computer lessons and bought a wireless router for her little hotel. :-)

We loved having our Ipad on our trip. Only the most remote places on Southern Crete didn't have wi-fi during our trip, but everywhere else did.

Must have app for downloading photos: Eye Fi (free). You just need to purchase their SD card ($25 for 2GB on Amazon) for your camera, and photo download is wireless.

Another must have app: Dropbox (free). Also download to your home computer. Any files you put into the dropbox on either device will be available to you on the other through wi-fi (or any "cloud" service).

When I travel, I find that some hotels, though they may have wi-fi, also have hard wired ethernet connection in the rooms. Wi-fi is often weak or non-existent in the rooms. Since my ipad cannot be connected to an ethernet port, I have aquired a portable router (TrendNet < $50; case with router, charger, ethernet cable is size of a paperback book).

Haven't been to Greece, but it's on my bucket list. Have a great trip.
