Iona accommodations
I'm thinking a staying a couple of nights on Iona. Both the Argyll Hotel and the St. Columba Hotel look nice. Does anyone know if there is a big difference between these two, as far as their location, service, atmosphere, etc.?
Thanks. |
Well, there's always the matte of tatse and I've not stayed in either. But I much prefer the look and style of the Argyll, it's in the village and the one review on tripadvisor is good.

Mind you, there are 5 good reviews for the St C.

Thanks for your responses, Sheila. I've seen photos of the Argyll, but not of the outside of St. Columba. When you say you prefer the look and style of the Argyll, how does it differ from St. Columba?
Thanks again. |
I stayed at the Argyll Hotel in 2002. It has a wonderful location overlooking the ferry landing. It has winding staircases, an internet connection and nice meals. I particularly remember Easter Sunday afternoon curled up in one of the lounges with a good book from their library and tea and cakes. Also, on Easter morning at breakfast, I colored Easter egg was hidden under our overturned coffee cups.
As I recall, the Argyll was in the middle of 'town'. The St. Columba was nearer the church. You won't go wrong with either one. |
I stayed in the St Columba but it was 9 years ago. At that time I found it rather old fashioned and depressing - it seemed to be aimed at an elderly clientele - but I expect it's been renovated since.
Note that the 'town' is basically one street, comprising 20 houses at the most :-) And the Abbey is at most 10 minutes walk away. |
Thanks, Barbara and Caroline. Your descriptions of the Argyll and the town sound exactly like what I'm looking for!

I found web sites for both of them last night. Yes, here you go
http://www.stcolumba-hotel.co.uk/ i was going to say that, having walked past it last year it was big and soulles and modern, but the web site says it's an old coverted manse. It does (based on the reviews and things) seem to cater for people at conferences or on retreats and stuff. The Argyll is right in down town Iona:), and seems more a locals sort of place. Which would be MY sort of place. |
Thanks, Sheila. Yes, I'm definitely not looking for a conference/big group type of hotel!
I've sent a query to the Argyll, so we'll see what I hear back from them. SlinkyDog |
