Invasion of the giant jelly fish

Hi

The beaches around Stavanger in Norway where I live is very nice...the only problem is that the water can be a bit too refreshing (read cold). I went swimming at Sola beach on Sunday and it was quite nice...the beach is long, not too crowded and the sand is nice and powdery. From time to time there can be jelly fish in the water and now there are reports saying that the jelly fish this year can be quite big...they have found speciments with a 1 meter diamter (about 3 ft). And it is a stinging kind of jelly fish...so if you come here to take a swim watch out for the red/brownish jelly fish.,..they can be quite nasty even if the sting itself does not last that long. Here is a picture: http://web3.aftenbladet.no/multimedi...gh_135004c.jpg

Regards
Gard

I couldn't get the link to open but I was unaware that jellyfish of any type were in colder water. I thought they only stayed in warm water areas.

Well, one thing's for certain, a nice messy oil spill will eliminate any jellyfish problems...that's another one of those "responsibilities" that comes with being an "oil-rich" nation...keeping it from ruining the environment.

There were jelly fish in the Swedish West coast. This is cold water too.

So, they must like the cold water too.

At least that one you can easily spot, gard.
There are lots of jellyfish in the North Sea as well, and that is not particularly warm. And there were LOTS in the mediteranean early July. Seems we're safe nowhere.

We had them (Meduse)around my Med. area. There were large sea birds which arrived too. They were bigger than the typical seagull.

They did leave after a bit.

Yuck! I recall getting stung by a jellyfish when I was younger, and it was not a pleasant experience; now I'm always nervous swimming in a beach.
