Int'l Driving Permit at AAA?

My husband and I were planning to go early today to the AAA to get our IDPs for our upcoming trip. I'm assuming we both have to be present to get one. Also, do they have forms or do I need to use the one available online? We already had our pictures done. Thanks!

I did the online form for speed's sake, but they did offer me a form. I believe each had to sign, so both will need to be there.

I've heard differing opinions on whether we wasted our $30 getting these. Most people say they are unnecessary.

It certainly can't hurt to get an IDP. We were stopped in Croatia and showed the police our IDP. No questions asked. Would it have been different if we had only shown our US drivers license? Who knows.

There's an AAA office by my work. I fill out the form there and finish things during a lunch break. Didn't even know there was an online form (not everyone has internet, so of course, it's not a requirement to do it online)

The form isn't very lengthy at all.

And yes, I believe you do each need to be there to sign your own IDP.

It may appear to be a waste of money but if the police stop you and you do not have an IDP then they can arrest you.

I have driven world wide and never had an IDP until a couple years ago, when the evidence became "ovewhelming" - It's necessary to get a rental in Chile and last month in Italia.

We, too, were stopped by police (for speeding - ouch!) in Croatia and did not have an IDP. They did not question it whatsoever! Our passports and CDN licenses were sufficient.

We did go this morning and it took less than 15 minutes for both of us. Even if it is questionable if you really need them, it wasn't a lot of money or time. So, I'd rather be on the safe side!

do you get the permit on the spot? we leave for italy in 2 weeks and its the last thing we need to do. hopefully we haven't waited to long.

Yes, she handed it right back to us after she put it together. It was super simple and quick!
