Internet in Paris

Why is it so difficult to find an internet business that the general public can use in Paris? We will be staying at an hotel that does not provide this service. Are there any posters that can give me some directions? We will be staying in Rue D'Amsterdam directly opposite Gare St Lazare. Thanks in anticipation Pawsha

there are many. the most established is EasyInternet Cafe it seems. Google it - i saw one branch in the Marais recently. Also reasonably inexpensive. A branch of EasyJet

It isn't difficult if you are in the right area. Obviously, this type of business isn't going to be in really expensive areas as there isn't the demand for it (and the rents are too high). So you go to the cheaper/student areas and can find such places. There are several in the Bastille area, for example, and the Latin Qtr. There aren't as many of these places as there used to be though, as more people have their own computers and rents are high in Paris.

I don't know the ones around where you are staying that well, but one I really like is on bd Beaumarchais a block or so on the right (east side) as you walk up from the Bastille column (11th arr).

Here's another in the 9th arr. not far from Gare du Nord, that's over your way.

Cybercube is a mini-chain that I've used in Paris and they have good services (but aren't that cheap). There is one of those over in the Bastille area, also:

If you go to the areas where the students are you will find plenty.
Take the Metro to Jussieau and there are two or three within a block.

Easier to look for accommodations which have Internet access in the first place.

Apartments are a good option for that. More and more people are advertising Internet access for vacation rentals.

StCirq Mar 12th, 2007 10:14 AM

Some post offices in Paris also have internet access.

PalenQ Mar 12th, 2007 10:18 AM

As do libraries, some

Internet cafés in Paris are dwindling as the French (finally) get computers and Internet connections of their own. The Latin Quarter seems to have a larger concentration of Internet cafés than anywhere else, although even there the Internet cafés have been closing (two of the largest in their day, EasyInternet and Access Academy, are long gone).

Essentially you have to find an area with a lot of young tourists or a lot of poor locals, as these are the key market for the Internet cafés.

Wi-Fi hot spots, on the other hand, are on the rise, and can be found in many locations.

Many thanks for your replies. The sites you have given me are a long way from our hotel and I gather sites close down at the drop of a hat. It seems strange that there are no places near the railway station or even anywhere in arrondisment 9. Cheers Pawsha

This place is in the 9th arrondisement.

pagesjaunes.fr shows another one in the 9th.

Just google cyber cafes, paris...you will find plenty of them.

I have never had a problem finding one if the hotel did not have one(they usually do)or I was staying in an apartment.

I usually take a list of the ones that would be convenient for me to use..just plan ahead...

We have been visiting Cafe Orbital near the Luxembourg garden for nearly 10 years. Lots of computers and helpful staff. I carry their business card in my wallet as a momento.

Travelnut Mar 14th, 2007 04:04 AM

When was the last time you went to Orbital..? I thought they closed a couple years ago at least.

AnthonyGA Mar 14th, 2007 06:57 AM

I also think they went out of business, and that was a few years ago. I do remember them, but I recall having some trouble finding the place the last time I was in that area.

Christina Mar 14th, 2007 10:25 AM

Orbital has been out of business for a long time now -- could be maybe even five years, but certainly several.

scrb is right. it easier with vacation rental if you're looking for the 24/7 internet access.
for example HomeAway.com (http://www.homeaway.com/paris/s/1216/fa/find.squery) on the left column on that page you can edit your search by 'internet access.' then each listing will tell you if it's wireless or not access.

and of course website similar to:
http://www.wififreespot.com/europe.html or http://www.jiwire.com/browse-hotspot-france-fr.htm can help you find something.

there was one around the corner from my hotel, run by two very nice sisters who helped me out.

..used one last week to post an urgent email. very near the St. Severn. In fact as you are on the N side of Blvd St. Michel it is on a small St turning N off St. Michel almost opposite the Cluny museum. I think it was 4 euros for an hr. A very convenient location for tourists.
