International Roaming, Data, worth it?
Hi guys, So i am going to be in greece for 8 days. My local carrier charges $25 for 50mb data, do you think it is worth the price. I just care about the data not the actual voice plans. do you think i can get a much better carrier in greece?

You might want to do a search on the Cosmote website. I'm not sure exactly what you need, but the Germanos shop at Athens Airport sells data-only SIMs for the iPad and other devices.

Most USA carriers will "lock" the device to their network, as their "price" of granting you a heavily subsidized phone or device. Simply inserting a new SIM chip will Not enable your phone to operate.
Make sure your phone (or other device) is "unlocked", or find a 3rd party service that will unlock it before you leave. |
That price sounds too low for international data roaming... you had better check on it. I saw a post recently where the person's friend came home to a $16,000 phone bill!

This type of question requires usage model to answer which you have not posted. What is your planned usage? Do you know how much data you use now? If not you can get it out using several different ways. Your phone bill probably shows how many MB you used in past months. Your phone OS might have data counter. If not there are many data counter APs you can download. From the usage, you can estimate your cost. If your planned usage is much higher than the package price, most of the expense is determined by the overrage price which you have not posted. If you consult more maps than usual for navigation, you data usage will be higher than your usual pattern. When I travel, I use significantly more bytes than at home. I consult maps more often. I look up restaurant, museum, transportation web sites more often. I look up weather, flight schedules, etc. All these add up to a lot of bytes.

Why not choosing free wifi spots? there are plenty in Athens, and also in many cafes elsewhere, plus we could select a hotel with free wifi as well....
