International Phone Card
Greetings!
I wanted to check here with you all to find about calling home from Italy (I head out Wednesday!). I've done a little research on fodors, but wanted to make sure from my readings that a phone card from a tobacco shop is probably the best price, correct?
I don't want to mess with a cell phone.
Thanks!
Monica

The international phone card can be bought at a tabac for E5 and has almost an hour of calling time. Just ask for a card for the US. When you call the toll free number, you get a recording in English so it's very easy to use.

Oops, the card I used in Rome was Europa (Eurodirect was the one I had in Spain) and it is good for calls within Europe as well as to North Amnerica. There's a picture of the card on this slowtrav page:

The Europa is the one I buy each time too. You can use it to call within Italy also - I think that actually costs more than calling back to the US, but it's still very inexpensive. By far the best way to go, IMO.
