International Phone Card

Greetings!

I wanted to check here with you all to find about calling home from Italy (I head out Wednesday!). I've done a little research on fodors, but wanted to make sure from my readings that a phone card from a tobacco shop is probably the best price, correct?

I don't want to mess with a cell phone.

Thanks!

Monica

Why not buy a international phone card at costco or Sam's club? They are very cheap and you can use them anywhere.

The international phone card can be bought at a tabac for E5 and has almost an hour of calling time. Just ask for a card for the US. When you call the toll free number, you get a recording in English so it's very easy to use.

The 5-Euro Eurodirect phone card, at a tabac in Italy, will give 240 minutes (yes, three hours) call time to Northe America.

Do these cards allow calls within Italy or just to the USA?

Thanks!

Oops, the card I used in Rome was Europa (Eurodirect was the one I had in Spain) and it is good for calls within Europe as well as to North Amnerica. There's a picture of the card on this slowtrav page:

The Europa is the one I buy each time too. You can use it to call within Italy also - I think that actually costs more than calling back to the US, but it's still very inexpensive. By far the best way to go, IMO.

Well, I'm going to get the Europa card. I assume there are different choices to buy at a tobacco shop?

Thanks again for everyone's comments. I head out tomorrow!
