Italian law requires you to have an international driver's permit. Whether or not you'll encounter anyone at a car rental agency who will ask you for it or even care whether you have it, is another story. If you're in an accident it will become an issue. Get one.

The car rental agencies will not require it , but if stopped by the police, you will need to have one.

You can get one from the CAA, not a complicated nor an expensive procedure.

We've been asked to present them at the car rental office. Whether they would refuse to rent us the car without the permits, who knows?

BTW, you still need to carry your locally issued drivers license.

Thank you everyone. I was convinced, but my husband wasn’t.
We will definitely get them.
