International drivers license in France?

Can anyone advise if we need an international drivers license in France? We are from Illinois with valid licenses.

We will be touring Normandy and the Avignon area.

Thanks!

France does not require it.

But it's handy to have if you're stopped - since many French cops don't speak or read English.

Why no spend a few $ to avoid any potential problems?

it isn't a "license". It is an International Driver's Permit, and is a translations of your valid stateside license. Not required for France - but I'd personally get one. An IDP only costs $15

The IDP only costs $15, but if you don't have your own photos, plan on spending anywhere between $25-30 for the permit, cost of AAA taking your photos + tax. ((b))
