International driver's license for Turkey

Is this required for a rental car in Turkey?

Thanks!

Where are you driving in Turkey? Who are you renting from?

regardless if it is required, i would get it..
I have had 3, for different trips to Italy, France, Holland...
For me, it is just an added reassurance.

Whether or not you rented a car without one is not an indicator of whether it's required by law. You can rent cars all over Italy without ever being asked to show an IDP, but the law requires you to have one.

It's not mandatory for Turkey, unless your license doesn't have a photo on it, but it's recommended:

And since the IDP is nothing more than a translation of your license, and Turkey is not a country where everyone speaks English and the language is extremely different from English, personally I'd get one.

Good points SC. In my case, I was there with my SIL who is Turkish, so language was not anything wew had to plan for. My licence did have picture, so that would have been OK. That being said, I've never take out a IDL, nor ever been asked for one, I guess I've been lucky.

We rented a car last week in Izmir from Auto Europe. When we went to the counter and the man asked for my husband's license, my husband asked which he wanted, NY or International and the guy said it didn't matter, so my husband gave him his NY license which was fine. Having said that, I agree with StCirq; it won't hurt to have an international one.

Just to clarify: It is not actually a "license." It's a translation of your regular driving license. In countries that do require the international driving permit, you must also carry your regular driving license.
