international driver's license?
we are renting a car in England - do I need an international driver's license? Leaving in two weeks. Thank you.

What country is your current driver's license Susan? As Canadians we have never had an international driver's license when renting vehicles in Britain. We have only bothered once when we were renting a car in France and also going in to Switzerland as there was some question that Switzerland might want Canadian drivers to have one.

I think what your referring to is an IDP, International Drivers Permit which translates your licence to the language of the country you are visiting, if your coming from America then it's translating English (well near enough) to English so no need BUT SOME hire car companies in the UK list it as a requirement (even if they don't ask to see it), so best to check with the company yourself.

There is no such thing as an interntional driver's license.
there is an International Permit - which is really just a translation of your license. used primarily in countries where the local cops probably don't speak English and don;t know if you're showing them a driver's license from one of the very many US states - or a state park or library card. Mandatory in some countries (Italy and I do;t know where else) and some rental agencies ask to see one. You can get it from AAA for $15 - well worth it. |
Tansay.. I am coming from the U.S.

Just FYI, AAA can also take the required photo if you decide to get it.
