Interlaken, Murren or Wengen?

My boyfriend and I will be taking a 3-4 day trip to Bernese Oberland at the end of this month. We can't decide where to stay out of Interlaken, Murren or Wengen. We keep hearing how wonderful Murren is - just one question though...if we go into Interlaken at night to go out, will we have any problems getting back to Murren (how late do the trains and cable cars run?)

Fairly late Not with great frequency, but quite late.

The last service leaves Interlaken Ost at 22:35. You have to take the bus down the valley at Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg, then the cable up to Mürren, arriving at 23:35 The last service using the funicular/railroad from Lauterbrunne via Grütschalp leaves Interlaken at 20:35.

If you want to party later you'll have to make a choice between mountains and Interlaken partying.

Full schedules at www.rail.ch

twenj

Murren and Wengen are much more beautiful places than Interlaken, which will be flooded with tour groups. Though I get that you're young, I would suggest you make a choice between sort of "remote" alps vs. "big resort" alps. Interlaken is in a valley, (and I think) away from the beauty of the Berner Oberland. Wengen and Murren are right up in the alps. Yes there are trains, but it seems a long way to go out for partying as you'll need to take 2 trains and a gondola or funicular to move from the village to Interlaken. Murren is up the mountain from Gimmelwald a tiny village where many college and 20 somethings stay. I've found when I stay there that I inevitably meet others after dinner while having beer or schnapps. So the difference I guess is between hanging out at home with your friends on a friday night vs. going to a night club. If nightlife is of major improtance to you, I would pick Interlaken to stay in.

Follow Ed's advice and review the information at his site, which is comprehensive and more than adequate for what you need to know. One more thing: Interlaken, as well as the entire valley below the Jungfrau, is not exactly what most people would call a big late night area. Indeed, Interlaken tends to shut down fairly early, especially when compared with cities such as London, Paris, and Rome. That, however, isn't exactly a sacrifice since there may well be opportunities to meet interesting people along the way. Murren is a very special place, the memory of which will last for many years. Enjoy what the village has to offer and schedule your night life activities for other places you will be visiting.
