Interlaken help
 

We will have several days before flying out of Zurich. Have been to Lakes Maggiore and Como and would like to spend time in scenic Switzerland. How many days to allow for Interlaken....hotels? Thanks.

A good start in wetting your beak would
start with four nights in Interlaken..
This will get your started in the Berneroberland. Interlaken has two trains stations Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost.West is more or less a thru station for trains from the West,
Bern, Geneva, Interlaken Ost is the main terminal, for the trains coming overe the Brunig Pass from Luzern and
the end of the line of the West rails.
From there the BOB which is the rail that takes up to Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen, with connections at Lauterbrunnen for M<urren, Wengen and
Kleine Scheidigg, which also can be reached by rail from Grindelwald.
Behind either rail station are the boat docks for the respective lakes of
Brienz and Thun.
Having a hotel in Interlaken might be best if near Interelaken Ost. two which are about a block away are the
EUROPA and the CARLTON. see www.swisshotels.ch.
We have always in the past stayed in Grindelwald at the SCHWEIZERHOF, which we found perfect to our needs, however
staying in Murren might be good choice
and have had friends stay at the ALPENBLICK and be satisified. There is much to do in the Berneroberland, so take your time and check into all that is available for you....

Interlaken is a good central point but you will find little to do or see. It's a nice town to get souvenirs, a decent meal, and to spend a night, but that's all.

I have always parked my car at Interlaken Ost and took the rail to my destination...Murren. Murren is a car free village and the views are awesome. The other villages are easily reached from here.

I recommend Hotel Alpenruth in Murren and you'll find all to your liking. Get a upper story room with a balcony and you will be amazed by the scenery.

As mentioned, Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, and Grindelwald are places to see and all are a good way to spend the afternoon. Make sure you see Jungfraujoch, it will be the highlight of you Alps visit. Take good hiking shoes and have a nice trip.

Consider staying in Thun every once in a while. Its a great little town and close to everything you want to see. You can take a very scenic short cruise on the Thunersee with the beautiful Alps surrounding it.

It has been a few years but we stayed at Hotel Weisses Kruez, very nice. It is near the rail station, is small and had a good breakfast. There are some larger hotels near the casino.

We honeymooned there for a week and were never bored. (Mind you, we were on our honeymoon.) I will say that if you don't hike, a week might be too long.

Stayed in Interlaken once and was hugely disappointed. IMO the best of the Berner Oberland is ABOVE Interlaken - Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Wengen, Murren. Interlaken is pretty, but if you keep going UP - it gets better and better...
