Interesting day trips from Lyon, France?

My husband and 21-year old son and I will be in Lyon, France for 3 days in April. We like cities but would be interested in exploring places outside of Lyon as a day-trip or two. Any suggestions? We are particularly interested in destinations that can be reached via train or bus. Also, we are interested in wine and cheese-related destinations, or anything interesting from an agricultural or nature perspective. Thanks!!!

As a college student, I remember a trip we took to the Chartreuse monastery. We hiked up from a point lower down the mountain, had a tour of the distillery and a nice lunch afterwards. While not wine, Chartreuse has a very interesting history, even if it's not a flavor all enjoy! (At the time, I much preferred their raspberry-flavored offering; these days, Chartreuse is used in a number of the mixologist-style cocktails that are very popular here in NYC.) Apologies but I have no idea if you can get there by public transit...

Probably not a full day trip, but the town of Vienne with its ancient Roman amphitheater is about 1/2 hour from Lyon.
