Inter-island travel - Greece

Hi - I am spending my honeymoon in Greece starting October 7. I have all the hotel reservations, but I have yet to book the airline flight from Athens to Santorini, the ferry (Flying Dolphin?) from Santorini to Crete, and the Airline flight from Crete to Athens. How far in advance do I need to do this? Now? And which airline do you recommend? Should I try to book online or call via telephone? Thank you!!!

Book your flights online _now_ on Aegean Airlines for the best price and the most reliability.

The ferry schedules for after October 2 have not yet been published, so you can't book them now even if you wanted to. In October it won't be necessary to book ahead anyway.

By the way, the old Flying Dolphins have been replaced by new Express Catamarans.

Thank you so much - I will book the flights now. We have also heard that it is difficult to get a cab from the airport in Athens. We will be arriving at 5:35 pm and going to the Grand Bretagne. Any truth to this? If so, any other options?

Another question - have I made a mistake planning our time in Athens on Saturday and Sunday? Will the historical sites be open??

I have no reason to think it will be particularly difficult to get a taxi into town from the airport unless many flights are arriving at the same time, but traffic will be terrible at that time of day. You might also care to know that the Airport 'Blue' Line Metro goes to Syntagma Square, which is just across the street from the Grand Bretagne. Cost for 2 people: 10 Euros. The taxi will be around 25 Euros, possibly more depending on how much luggage you have.

Yes, the historical sites will be open on the weekend. Some are closed on Mondays.

If you are arriving before 11 p.m., I would consider taking the bus, or if it is still operating at that time, the subway in. It is extremely cheaper, and the fare is not left to the discretion of the cab driver who is as likely to triple charge, as not.
