Innsbruck - worth it?
I'm not going to go into all the details of our itinerary - suffice it to say going to Innsbruck would require a little bit of backtracking for us on the train, and though we would really love to go, we're considering dropping it. So basically my question would be - is Innsbruck wonderful or just nice? (it would be in June)

abby, this a mostly an outdoor sports destination.
What are your interests in this forthcoming trip? If it's culture, museums, food, etc., you could do better elsewhere. On the other hand, if you're into snow skiing, the Stubai Glacier will allow you to ski, most likely, even in June. |
from the pictures I've seen, I just love the landscape - however, we are going to Salzburg, so if Salzburg is just as pretty (landscape-wise) than we would drop Innsbruck
|
I say "Drop It" Spend the time in the Salsburg area like Gossau or better yet Hallstatt!

I loved both Salzburg and Innsbruck, but in terms of landscape, I prefer Innsbruck. I don't know how much backtracking you would have to do for Innsbruck, but here is a thread with some info. I hope this will help you to decide.

It isn't as if the scenery suddenly drops off or becomes less dramatic as you leave the Innsbruck area...and it WOULD help to know where you will have been already to properly answer this.
You do not say why you would love to go there but if it is mainly for the scenery you could find the same elsewhere in Austria and IMO there is a lot more to see and do in someplace like Salzburg than in Innsbruck. |
I have been in Innsbruck 3 times and spent a day touring it. The Hapsburg's old residence is the usual ornate dwelling. That was the most interesting place I found.
We had a car and found driving around to the smaller villages was also interesting. I think Salzburg has a bit more to offer. If the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse is open, which is south of Kitzbuhl, it is a scenic drive that I like. Some think it is an overpriced toll road, but the mountain views are great and there is a national park along the road that has a view of the largest glacier in Austria. I enjoyed driving over it. It is a mountain road, however, and in places it is steep and curvy. For those who like mountains, I think it is a fun drive. |
