Well you can see Innsbruck itself in about a day and a half (it's not a very big town) then a couple more days for the mountains (unless you plan on skiing - and that's kind of early for a lot of places).
Not sure why you're there for a month - are you taking a class or? that will keep you busy - or is it all vacation? If the latter I would start picking cities to do short stays in - as well as day trips.
Bahn.de has the best train schedule info.
You might also want to check into bargain flights.

Hall in Tirol is a lovely little town a few kilometers east of Innsbruck reachable by train and also by bus. Important salt area for many years so the old town is as large or maybe larger than Innsbruck's.
It's quite popular with Fodorites so do a search and you'll find lots of additional information.

At that time of year, your best bet for skiing would be stubaier glacier
www.stubaier-gletscher.com/index.php?lang=en
They seem to have buses all year round but its a lot easier by car.
There are a few Irish bars, I went to one in the centre of the old town but I can't remember the name and it seemed ok

Hi Mark - Within a couple of hours of Innsbruck you have some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in Europe - the Dolomites
Will you have a car? You could plan a superb drive over some of the spectacular Dolomite passes - Gardena, Sella, etc.
Towns of interest in northern Italy (- south Tyrol) include Vipiteno, Bressanone, Bolzano (- Ice Man museum), Trento ... all reachable by train. You could even spend a few days seeing the sights of that area.
Munich and Salzburg are other possibilities.
Hope this helps ...

Steve, unless you are Italian, these towns are called Sterzing and Brixen. Thatīs what people living ther call them.
Just to be politically correct
Bozen/Bolzano is and has always been pretty much bilingual.

From Innsbruck you could also get to Munich easily by train if you want to explore a bigger city. You could also get farther into northern Italy than the Dolomites quite easily (Verona, Padua, Venice)
Will you have mostly weekends for travel or the whole month?

>since Mussolini, to be correct
Not really - it was THE staging post for the transalpine trade (Augsburg, Fugger family?), with A LOT of Italian traders and inhabitants. Mussolinis resettlements changed it in degree but not in principle.
Not so for all the small towns which are to this moment Austrian in appearance and German speaking. Only there was this Italian noble who was tasked with inventing Italian names for any German-speaking village, mountain, forest and whatever, back in the 1920s. Sloppy as he was, the Kaserwiesen (cheesemakerīs meadows) near Olang were understood as Kaiserwiesen and are now called Prati Imperiali...
>You'll be telling me Milano is Mailand next.
Only if you are a German tourist

Hi,
A couple places of interest within a couple of hours from Innsbruck:
Ambras Castle/Schloss Ambras (Innsbruck)
Funicular from Innsbruck to Hungerburg and the cable car from Hungerburg to Hafelekar.
www.nordpark.at
Hall in Tirol (nicer than Innsbruck, IMO)
Mittenwald, Germany. The quintessential Bavarian village! Beautiful.
Garmisch
Oberammergau
Fuessen/Neuschwanstein/Hohenschwangau
Strezing/Vipiteno
Brixen/Bressanone
Val Gardena/Grodental

The train ride north toward Seefeld, Mittenwald & Garmisch is spectacular! Sit on the left side for great views of the Inn valley as you climb the mountain from Innsbruck Hbf. I've found that most of the regional Austrian trains are much more modern than the old livery of the DB Regio.
