Innsbrook

Arrive in Innsbrook from Rome and have about a day and a half then heading to Switzerland by train. What's best to see in that short time frame? Any suggestions on safe (inexpensive) hotel near train station?

Al Godon Mar 15th, 2001 07:53 AM

Do you have reference to Innsbruck in Austria??

carolyn Mar 15th, 2001 09:48 AM

Explore the old town shopping area. See St. Jakob's Church; it is really beautiful. See Maria Theresa's palace (I think it's a palace). Eat pastry with abandon. I really liked Innsbrook.

If the weather is good, go all the way up the mountain at the north end of town - I think it's called Hafelekar. Spectacular.

al-
What do you mean do I have reference to Innsbrook in Austria?

Steve Mar 15th, 2001 01:25 PM

We were there in Nov.'95; train station had hotel location service that directed us to hotel about half-mile walk away. Kinda fun walking in the snow. But I'm sure if you got there early they could direct you to a closer one. There's a bus stop near center of town; one of the routes takes you to a nice overlook area with a small restaurant. Ask in train station for directions. In colder months, the old town area closed early. Looked interesting though. Nice sized city just to wander in.

Stayed at the Hotel Europe just by the train station, but quite pricey at about $150/night (back in 1994). Make sure you see the famous golden roof. We were lucky to chance upon a group of locals in traditional costume dancing in front of it. St. Jakob's church (with a lovely Cranach alterpiece) and the Palace as mentioned above are well worth a visit, as is the museum in town with its mediaeval collection.

The name of the Austrian city is Innsbruck. It means the bridge over the river Inn. It is not Innsbrook, even though your spelling pronounces much like the Austrian city's name. So with a funny spelling, I felt it in order to ask.
I presumed that is what you meant, but
spelling the name correctly removes all doubts about your inquiry.
What would your response be if an Austrian asked you about Niu Awlins?

claudia Mar 15th, 2001 10:04 PM

Al-
I stand corrected. As for your "Niu Awlins" question, I guess my answer would be a smile. No info - never been there!
Thanks-

Most of the others have given good advice on Innsbruck. The Hofburg, which was revitalized in 1999, and Castle Ambras (Schloss Ambras) are worth looking at. However the Hofkirche contains the tomb that Maximillian hoped to occupy. He didn't quite make it there, but the statues are impressive, or perhaps depressing. Poor old Max had to be buried elsewhere because the burgers of Innsbruck would not let him in! (Some dispute over his troops paying for the damages they did.)

I actually lived in Innsbrook for about 3 months in 2003. A beatifull town to visit. I would recommend You to look for a Bed & Breakfast. It is usually worth its value. Just make sure to avoid any of the Penz family hotels (Maximilian, Penz, Penz Sporthotel) because they are expensive, and their service is LOUSY...not to mention that You will never get a phone call directed to Your room or the food at breakfast which is old and tasteless after many serving attempts( they try to save money by serving the same food over and over).

Apart from the fact that this thread is ancient, I find it hard to believe that someone would have lived for three months in a city and still doesn't have a clue how to spell it properly.

And you would certainly want to see the Olumpic ski stadium. A few years ago my daughters and I took the tram to the top and foolishly walked down the ski hill (never again, my legs hurt for days) but it is definitely a must see. And the humor of it was below the ski hill was a huge city cemetary (I guess if they didn't make a successful jump). And having been in Old Town twice within a few years, might say it is fun to eat (outside if the weather permits) at Mama Mia"s. It is an inexpensive pizza type place and the individual size pizza's were huge. Have fun. Halfpint

And all this time I thought it was Endsbooke. Or is it Endsupbroke?

I did enjoy Munching, lots of good stuff there to eat.

And then there was Firenze. Never did find Florence, but the Uffuzzi Gallery was nice.

Hi,
Just wanted to mention to check the status of the Hafelekar cable car before going up to Hungerburg. We were in Innsbruck October 2006 and the Hafelekar cable car was totaly dismantled. Lots of construction/demolition was going on. We went up to Hungerburg to have dinner at the Cafe/Restaurant Hungerburg, and that was in shambles as well.

Folks, PLEASE NOTE THE ORIGINAL DATE OF THIS THREAD!!

Nobody would reply to a 6 year old thread unless they are either advertising or have an axe to grind. In this case it's the latter.

bob_brown Mar 19th, 2007 07:23 PM

Grinding an ax? Not me.
I was offering financial advice and culinary guidance.

P_M Mar 20th, 2007 09:19 AM

That wasn't directed at you bob, since you are not the one who brought up this thread. It was resurrected by URIELIT01, who clearly has a grudge against the Penz family.

Apologies to bob brown for the misunderstanding.

Mariafun Mar 21st, 2007 10:29 AM

Mr. P.M. I DO NOT understand what is your grudge with URIELITO1. It is people lake him/her who help and warn the rest of us to stay away from such type of "Hotels". I wish he had written and warned us before. I did too stay at the Penz Hotel last Year(as part o my tour) and - to tell you truth- the food at the breakfast buffet was old and spoiled. It RUINED my 2 weeks trip on its third day. I had to endure a "stomach flu" for the rest my journey.

Sooo... if there is anyone grinding an axe it is not URIELITO1 to be honest!

Mariafun.

Ps. "INNSBROOK" IS AN ACCEPTED SPELLING AS PER "THE AMERICAN DICTIONARY OF MODERN ENGLISH"

P_M Mar 21st, 2007 10:41 AM

First of all, I said nothing about the spelling of "Innsbrook."

I'm not the one with a grudge, but it seems strange that someone would top a 6 year old thread just to post something negative.

PS I see this is your first post under this screen name. It's quite obvious that you are the same person as URIELITO1, you're not fooling me or any regular on this board.
