Hi Paule. Good to read about your plans. Love the number of days you're giving it. We're finalizing our plans to head to that part of the world as well. Fly into Split July 10 and out of Dubrovnik July 24.

Hi, tp! How exciting! I’m sure you’ll have a great time - it should be a great place to visit during the summer. Will you be going elsewhere on the trip? By the way, Egypt is definitely somewhere in the mix of my top 5 or 6 trips, and I was fascinated that you were able to travel there during the pandemic.

I’ve just added a few more days (&#128513 which should give me a chance to spread out beyond Croatia, too.

Awesome! More days are always better. Given that we only have two weeks we are focusing on a smaller geography. Our itinerary is Split-Hvar-Korcula-Ston-Dubrovnik-Kotor-Cavtat. We've booked fully refundable accommodations but are waiting a week or two more on flights, to see which routes actually take off. Such are the considerations of pandemic travel.

Egypt has always been on our list but we only committed a month out when we felt good about the data. Glad we went the time we did as we had the place to ourselves and could really enjoy the places we were visiting. While the open air sites would be fine, I'm not sure I would have enjoyed the tombs at the Valleys of the Kings and Queens as much. Not only did we not had to contend with others, we were not on the time limits that are imposed for crowd control. Do get there sooner rather than later if you have the chance.

I continue to be inspired by your reports too. Been referring back to your writeup on Morocco earlier this year. On our short list for the late fall..

Thanks, tp, you’ve inspired me with your many reports, including the most recent one to Egypt, so I’m glad I can return the favor!

I’m glad you’re traveling before me to Croatia so I can take advantage of your experiences there, too! 😉

(By the way, I’ve no idea where that weird set of symbols and numbers came from in my earlier post to you. Another computer gremlin!)

So I now have a total of 33 nights to play with! And with fingers crossed, Slovenia will open up to US citizens. I wonít bore you with how much Iím tempted to make it a Croatia and (Puglia) Italy trip since Italy is open, but for now, Iím keeping to the initial plan.

Hereís the current iteration of the itinerary:
Croatia + Slovenia + Montenegro - 33 nights
Zagreb - 3 (pick up car when leaving)
Llubjana - 3
Lake Bled - 2 (Lake Bohinj, Gorge during the day between)
Piran -1/2
Rovinj - 4/5
Plitvice - 2
Sibenik - 3
Split - 4 (drop car)
Hvar/Korcula - 3
Dubrovnik -3
Montenegro(Kotor Bay)- 2
Cavtat - 2

Questions:
1) Should we stay in Hvar instead of Korcula since this will be early October? I did book a place in Korcula but Iíve been reading how it becomes dead after September and add how much less busy it is because of the pandemic, I was wondering if this would be too quiet.

2) Is a stop in Piran too much since we will be staying in Rovinj?

3) Anyplace youíd add in Croatia if we remove Piran and/or Kotor? Iím trying to keep changes down and do day trips as much as possible.

So are you venturing further into October? What days would you be on the islands?

Piran is nice, there are things to do around, or just take a nice chill day. It’s similar to Rovinj but not 100%.

I have only been to Korcula a couple of times. One was in September a few years ago and yes, things were quieting down. Hvar town usually stays pretty lively through mid October. Can you do two days in each?

rialtogirl,
I don’t think we need to stop in Piran - already it’s feeling like there are just too many stops. Yes, we extend a little later into October.
Here is the itinerary, without Piran, but adding Hvar (3 nights) and including dates. I haven’t proofed it to make sure it’s 100% accurate, since I do keep tweaking it, but here it goes:
With dates:
9/15-9/18 - Zagreb - 3
9/18-9/21 - Llubjana - 3
9/21- 9/23 - Lake Bled -2
9/23- 9/28 - Rovinj - 5
9/28 - 9/30 - Plitvice -2
9/30 - 10/3 - Sibenik- 3
10/3 - 10/6 - Split - 3 (drop car? )
10/6 - 10/9 - Hvar - 3
10/9 - 10/11- Korcula - 2
10/11 - 10/14- Dubrovnik -3
10/14 - 10/16 - Kotor Bay 2
10/16 - 10/18 - Cavtat 2

I think I have at least one too many places in the itinerary. I’d like to keep it tighter. I changed Split to 3 nights in the itinerary since one of those days was going to be a day trip to Hvar. But perhaps leave it at 4 nights?

Also, any suggestions how to include the Peljesac peninsula and Ston on the way back? We won’t have the car then but it’s definitely places I’d love to include.

Ok.. get rid of sleeping in Kotor. Stay in Dubrovnik and do a day tour there. Visit Cavtat from Dubrovnik too.

you can visit Piran for an hour or so on the way to Rovinj...

I made one suggestion before to get a driver from Orebic to Dubrovnik that can make some stops on the way.. coukd be an option.

Thanks, rialtogirl. Dropping Kotor Bay may make the most sense. I am going to leave the stay in Cavtat for now, though. I just think staying as close to the airport for a 7:30am flight and a place to really relax with a great view will be a good way to wind down and 2 nights there feels good.

Good plan Progol. Actually you could do this: leave Dubrovnik with driver for your tour to Montenegro. En route drop your luggage off in Cavtat. Go on your tour in Montenegro, on the way back get dropped off in Cavtat. Last day, chill out Cavtat day... this is assuming you would get a private driver, but if you did a van tour, you would likely be the only people anyway in October and I bet you could arrange for your Cavtat host to meet you on the side of the road to do luggage hand off.

this way you are not backtracking...

Thanks, rialtogirl,
I’m beginning to get overwhelmed! I’m leaning toward leaving out Kotor Bay entirely - if we did go, I’d still prefer to self-drive and stay over, rather than doing a day trip. At the end of our long trip, I think we might want to take it easy, but nothing here is set in stone!

Thanks for all your help!

In May 2017, we spent 21 days in Croatia, Slovenia & Montenegro. Best vacation ever. The trip was put together by Jen from Truly Croatia who did a fantastic job. Here are the number of nights we spent at each location.

3 Zagreb
2 Ljubljana, Slovenia
2 Rovinj
1 Plitvice Lakes
2 Split
7 Cruise - Split-Dubrovnik
1 Montenegro
3 Dubrovnik

Not to throw another location into the mix, but I'm thinking of spending a night or two in Trieste, Italy after Ljubljana on my trip.

progol - regarding the dinners at Plitvice Miric inn, they told me they do not have the bookings to make the dinners work, its a staffing issue. But maybe this is going to change. If I find out they will do the dinners, I will let you know.

I know my husband is very interested in Trieste and itís one of the places I think about including. Right now, the restrictions wouldnít work for a visit there but who knows what will happen in September.

Thank you! I hope, for their sake, that bookings will pick up. And, of course, Iíd love to have their dinner.😉
