Ingo: Dresden question regarding train

Hello Ingo, quick question as you know we will be ending our trip with 5 days in dresden. I will be buying a twin pass with addtional days available at 40 usd for both of us. In dresden how may days should i count on for going to see surroundings. and if so how many extra days should i add on to the pass or should i just purchase regional train tickets from dresden itself for surronding areas! thanks vic

Hi M,

Have you entered your itinerary at www.railsaver.com and clicked "only if it saves money"?

Depends of course on how far you travel - doing a day trip to fantastic Saxon Switzerland - say to Bad Shcandau and back would probably cost at least $20 on a walk up basis - but the Lander Pass could well be cheaper for two - these local passes are very cheap and though you're restricted to regional trains that's all you'll need on day trips.
To get exact fares go to www.bahn.de and you'll get fares in euros - actual prices you'll pay at stations - www.railsaver.com will give you RailEurope prices i believe and these don't always reflect the real at the station prices. The bahn site also covers the various Lander regional passes available. The German Pass is an absolute bargain for wide-ranging travel in Germany - for example a round trip Frnakfurt-Munich regular fare ticket would cost more than the 4-day Twin Pass last time i checked.
About using railsaver.com - if they say you don't need a pass they are no doubt right as they are often comparing higher ticket prices than you'd get in Germany. At least this is my understanding that they use RailEurope fares. A good measuring stick but not the last word.

railsaver.com would not help in this case.

There are indeed "Ländertickets" available for the German states - in Saxony it costs 24 Euro per day and it is valid for up to 5 persons, which is still cheaper than 40 USD. (And, btw, it is also valid in Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt)

Yet cheaper is a Family Day Ticket for up to 2 Adults and four kids for the Regional Transportation Network. It costs 13.50 Euro for one day and covers trips to Saxon Switzerland National Park, Meissen, the castles in the surroundings of Dresden.

So my recommendation is NOT to buy additional days with the twin railpass.

You're welcome!

Yes, the 13.50 Euro are for one day, meaning as many trips as you want to take. These "Family Day Tickets" of the Regional Transportation Network (VVO) are valid on trams, buses, most ferries (except the paddle steamers), regional trains (S-Bahn, RB, RB, IRE) but not the high-speed trains.

Feel free to ask more questions.

Ingo
