Information re: Overnight ferry from Palermo to Rome

We're thinking of taking the overnight ferry from Palermo to Rome. Has anyone done this?
The company doesn't provide a lot of information regarding overnight accommodation other than "double cabin" etc.
Would appreciate any information.

I haven't taken the ferry to Rome but did from Palermo to Naples on Tirrenia. If you are also considering a Tirrenia ferry then the ships should be very similar. Here is the link to my post with feedback on that trip in 2002.

You can also do a search on this board for the names GAC or Steve James. They have a lot of helpful information on ferries posted here.

Maddy,

Thank you so much. Lots of good information.

There are now two companies running between Palermo and Civitavecchia, Grandi Navi Veloci and SNAV (www.gnv.it and www.snav.it).
On both, all cabins have a bathroom with a shower and WC. GNV's ships generally have four-berth cabins so, if you book a two berth, you'll actually get a twin-bedded cabin with the upper berths folded away (instead of two bunks one above the other). The company's schedule specifies which particular ship sails each night. The biggest and newest are LA SUPERBA and LA SUPREMA, but they're all similar, apart from the VICTORY which was rebuilt after being bought second-hand from Japan.

GeoffHamer, thanks so much. I didn't realize there were two competing companies. I'm going to book today.
