Information on Medical Insurance abroad

Quick question, I in the process for applying for a Schengan Visa (Visa for France, SPain and ......).
In the list of documents, the embassy has requested Insurance that will cover "emergency medical assistance or urgent hospitalization" . What is this, do I have to buy separate Insurance. If I already have regular medical insurance, do I need this. Has anyone had a similar experience.

Hi rr,

Check with your insurance provider to see if you are covered for emergencies while in Europe.

Ira's advise is correct; if you are not fully insured for medical while abroad, however, you can purchase additional insurance through a number of policies that you'd be able to find at:

My insurance carrier covers me while abroad but the kicker is...I have to pay out of pocket and then submit bills etc. for re-embursement. As advised, check with your company regarding policy. I have also purchased trip insurance...again, read the fine print to see what is and is not covered. I think I paid a little over 100.00 and mine included medical evacuation. There are also stipulations on what is and isn't covered according to how soon you purchase your policy after booking. Check out the web sites given and call your own carrier. Have a great trip.

advice above just about sums it up! Check with your insurer and see what your present policy includes (and excludes!! read the fine print). Some credit cards also include insurance (BUT again get out the magnifying glass). Once done check to make sure you are ADEQUATELY insured for care while you are there AND medical evacuation home. Medevac can be extremely expensive in a worse case scenario- think lear (plane fuel 2 pilots) an MD, an RN and and RT!!
