Infomation on Freiburg, Germany

Traveling to Freiburg for the first time. My husband is traveling for business and I am tagging along. Question is it worth going shelling out abt. $700 airfare for 3 days. Also have an opportunity to go to Copenhagen in the fall. The money is not an issue if Freiburg is a must see destination. I have traveled to Paris, Rome, Vienna and parts of Spain, can Freiburg touch those destinations. I am 50 years old, like to have a good time and see beautiful places. help!

I was there for a night and part of a day. What month will you be there? We were there in February; it was lovely in the snow. The Black Forest is nearby, which was also so cool in the snow. I remember lots of cute shops.

Freiburg is a nice provincial town in a nice setting at the foot of the Black Forest, and cannot be compared to Paris, Rome or Vienna. I would not spend that money just to go to Freiburg.

Stopped in at Freiburg in October 2003 on a train vacation between Amsterdam-Zurich. It's a university town, charming old quarter, some elevation...It is definitely not in the same league as Paris, Rome and Vienna.
Not sure I'd spend $700 airfare for -only- this town (but I don't have a lot of spare money so it's an easy decision for me!)

Been to Freiburg this summer. The streets in the old town area are nice, see the old town gates and the square around the cathedral. You can climb the cathedral tower. One day is OK for Freiburg.

On the other hand, you can do Basel on a day trip (1 hr or so by train), or even Colmar over the Rhine in Alsace, for a picturesque old town. Strasbourg is also about 1 hr by train for a day trip.

I thought Freiburg was quite charming, as is the nearby town of Staufen. If you have half a day left over, I'd recommend Staufen. There's even a hotel, including the specific room, where Faust is supposed to have been carried off to hell by Mephistophles.
