Info re going by train from Rome to Assisi

My aunt who has some mobility problems will be visiting Rome and wants to do a day trip to Assisi. She can walk fine but I don't think she could negotiate walking very steep streets. I know that an option would be to take the train to Assisi, but I was wondering how easy it is to get transportation from the train station to the Basilica and how close can the taxi get to the Basilica. I was in Assisi years ago but went in a Bus tour and I can't recall how close the bus was to the church.
Also, from the Basilica to the town, please remind me if it's very hilly . I seem to recall it was but maybe it was all down hill from there?

I would appreciate any info. Thanks!

A taxi can take you from the station, about 2 miles away, very close to the Basilica--not a problem. From there, walking into the village is not hard at all.

CL - You might need to phone for a taxi from Assisi station.

Otherwise there's the bus shuttle up to the town ...

I had the exact same scenario when I took my Mom to Rome in Nov 2002. We took a train from Termini, got to the Assisi station and walked outside to find a parked taxi who took us up to Assisi in no time. We didn't have to call, there were a couple of taxis already lined up.

From the Basilica to the town is not hilly-- there are side streets, laterals to the main street that have a steep incline, but easily avoided, if you have to.

Thank You for your replies.

Viajero,

If I'm understanding you correctly, there are ways to go from the Basilica to the town that avoids steep inclined streets?
How did you get back to the train station?

THanks!

If you want to get to the center of town and the sites and stores nearby, at some point, depending on the route that you take, you will have a fairly steep incline.
You can take a bus or taxi back to the train. Smaller busses run through the town.
